Electing to bat first, South Africa were bowled out for only 55 runs as Mohammed Siraj took 6 wickets in the first innings. India were in a good position at 153/4, but then a stunning collapse happened as India lost their last six wickets in a space of 11 deliveries without adding a single run.
Jasprit Bumrah then took six wickets in South Africa’s second innings, while Aiden Markram plundered one of the greatest-ever Test centuries on one of the most difficult pitches seen in the 21st century. India gunned down the target of 79 runs with 7 wickets in hand to level the series.

Shortest completed Test match ever: the IND vs SA 2nd Test in Cape Town lasted only 642 balls (107 overs), making it the shortest-ever Test match that ended in a result. The previous record was of the 1932 Melbourne Test between South Africa and Australia, which lasted 656 balls.
Only 464 runs were scored in the match. This is the lowest match aggregate in a completed Test match between India and South Africa.
This was India’s first-ever Test match victory at Newlands in Cape Town in their 7th attempt at this venue.
Jasprit Bumrah is taking giant strides towards greatness in Test cricket. This was his 8th five-wicket haul in his 28th Test outside Asia. Among Indians, only Kapil Dev has more five-wicket hauls outside Asia—9 in 45 Tests—than Bumrah. Also, this was Bumrah’s third Test five-for in South Africa, the joint-most for an Indian with Javagal Srinath.

Aiden Markram enters record books: Markram scored 106 runs in South Africa’s second innings total of 176—that is 60.23 percent. This is the highest percentage of team runs scored by a South African batsman in a completed Test innings. The second-highest score in this innings behind Markram was Dean Elgar’s 12.
The record for the highest percentage of runs in a completed innings is held by Australia’s Charles Bannerman, who scored 165 runs (67.34%) out of Australia’s total of 245 in the first-ever Test match, against England, in 1877.
