IND vs NZ 1st Test Day 5 Report: India lost their second home Test match in 2024 and third under Rohit Sharma’s captaincy in under less than two years. For context, India had lost only two home Test matches from 2013 to the end of 2022. For New Zealand, it was a historic victory as they registered their first test match win in India after 36 years and only their third overall.
Matt Henry, William O’Rourke, and Rachin Ravindra were their three biggest contributors to this memorable win where India had threatened the unthinkable at one point during their second innings. But New Zealand kept their calm throughout the game, be it while batting and bowling, to battle the testing periods when India looked ominous and came out trumps eventually.
With this eight-wicket victory in Bengaluru, New Zealand will go to Pune with the dream of securing a Test series win in India, a feat no team has managed to achieve in the last 11 years.
IND vs NZ 1st Test Day 5 Report:
India needed an early breakthrough, and Jasprit Bumrah provided it with the second ball of the day by trapping Tom Latham in front with an inswinger. Bumrah and Siraj sustained the pressure with terrific lines and lengths for the initial few overs, with Bumrah in particular torturing Devon Conway, while Will Young looked composed. New Zealand managed only 13 runs in the first 8 overs but had lost only one wicket.
Then runs started to flow as both pacers conceded two boundaries each. That deflated the Indians and becalmed the Kiwis. The Chinnaswamy crowd’s noise that was deafening at one point was silenced.
It found its voice for a little while when Bumrah got Conway lbw but in the same over, the ace Indian speedster was creamed for three fours that took New Zealand to 50 runs. That was the 7th over in a row that Bumrah had bowled. The Indian players’ shoulders dropped, and their body language said they had admitted to the defeat.

Young, who hadn’t been troubled much by the pacers, then crashed a couple of fours to Ravindra Jadeja. Boundaries came from the other end, too, now that Rachin Ravindra got into the act. Kuldeep Yadav was tonked for a six over mid-wicket by Young before Rachin collected 11 more runs off the wrist spinner. Young sealed the chase to complete New Zealand’s first test win in this country since 1988!
