Najmul Hossain Shanto won the toss and elected to bowl first. Openers Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli showed a proactive approach and attacked from the onset of the innings, collecting 23 runs in the first two overs, with Kohli slogging Shakib for a six. Rohit freed his hands against Shakib as well for a six and a four, but played one shot too many and was caught out for 23 (11).
Kohli ended India’s powerplay at 53/1 with a six to Mustafizur Rahman. He walloped spinner Rishad Hossain for a maximum but was bowled by pacer Tanzim Hasan Sakib with a slower delivery. Kohli scored 37 (28), more runs than his last four innings combined. Suryakumar pulled Sakib for a six on his first ball but edged behind on the second.
Rishabh Pant hit his straps by a six and two fours to Mustafizur and then smoked Hossain over long-on, but the spinner had the last laugh as Pant reverse-swept straight to short thirdman. He scored 36(24).
Shivam Dube started off slowly, scoring 10 runs off his first 15 balls before getting under deliveries from Shakib, Sakib, and Hossain for three sixes, but lost his wicket to Hossain. Hardik, meanwhile, was growing in confidence in his innings.
Hardik was 20 (15) at the 17-over mark. He then clobbered sixes to Hossain and Sakib and collected three fours in the 20th over, by Mustafizur, to reach his half-century in 27 balls, taking India’s total to 196.

The Indian bowlers then simply didn’t give any chance for Bangladesh to get near the required rate. Arshdeep and Bumrah kept a lid early on by conceding 16 runs in the first three overs. Axar Patel leaked 11 runs in the fourth over and Liton Das pulled Hardik for a six in the fifth, but the pacer had the last laugh as he failed to clear the fence once again with the pull shot on a slower delivery and holed out to Suryakumar at deep square leg.
The opening stand of 35 runs in 27 balls didn’t really get Bangladesh off to the brisk start they needed while chasing 197. The second-wicket partnership of 31 (31) between skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto and Tanzid Hasan put Bangladesh effectively out of the contest.
Only formalities remained from thereon. Kuldeep Yadav had his first big moment in this tournament as he picked up three wickets, two of them with a googly. Bumrah continued his sensational tournament, finishing with figures of 2/13, four runs of which came via an edge. Arshdeep took two wickets.
Score summary: India 196/5 in 20 overs (Hardik Pandya 50*, Tanzim Hasan Sakib 2/32); Bangladesh 146/8 in 20 overs (Najmul Hossain Shanto 40, Kuldeep Yadav 3/19). India defeated Bangladesh by 50 runs.
