IND vs BAN 2nd Test Day 5 Report: The last day in Kanpur began with Bangladesh 26/2 and trailing by 26 more runs. The hosts had forced the issue for a result with the bat and wanted to take quick wickets—which they did—while the visitors wanted to save the test by batting for long, which they couldn’t.
Eventually, India did what they were expected to do at the start of day 5, that is, win the Test. They did it with seven wickets in hand. It’s an epic feat considering only 35 overs of play were possible in the first three days.
This series win further extended India’s dominance at home; they have won all the Test series at home since 2013.
IND vs BAN 2nd Test Day 5 Report:
In less than 100 minutes of the first session, India had taken five wickets. Mominul Haque, the centurion from the first innings, was the first to go. The left-hander attempted a sweep shot off a legside delivery from R Ashwin but got an edge and was sharply taken by KL Rahul at leg slip. Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto played a highly questionable shot—a reverse sweep against Jadeja on a day 5 pitch—and was bowled.
The major resistance was provided by opener Shadman Islam, who was finally removed by Akash Deep after scoring 50 runs, edging to Jaiswal at gully while playing a loose cover drive as the ball seamed away.
India pounced on further with Jadeja as the left-arm spinner dismissed two senior Bangladeshi batters, Liton Das and Shakib Al Hasan. Liton edged to Pant as a delivery bounce extra, while Shakib gave a simple return catch to Jadeja.
Bumrah then returned to clean up the remaining scalps. He had Mehidy Hasan Miraz outside-edging to Pant before trapping Taijul Islam lbw for a duck via a superb off-cutter/slower ball. With a similar off-cutter, he bowled Mushfiqur Rahim, who was batting well on 37, but decided to play a hoick across the line on the last ball before lunch.
Bangladesh were bowled out for 146 runs and set India a target of only 95 runs. Bumrah, Jadeja, and Ashwin took three wickets each.
The chase was made comfortable for India by Jaiswal, who struck his second half-century of the match. The left-handed opener scored 51 runs off 45 balls with eight fours and one six as India won by 7 wickets. Virat Kohli looked good once again in this Test, scoring 29* off 37 balls.
India will next host New Zealand for three Test matches before touring Australia for five Tests. Before the New Zealand Test series, India and Bangladesh will meet in a three-match T20I series.
