IND vs BAN 2nd Test Day 1 Report: Only 35 overs of play was possible on day 1 of the India vs Bangladesh Kanpur Test because of heavy rain. The match already had a one-hour delayed start due to a wet outfield that was caused by the rain overnight. Bangladesh have scored 107 runs for the loss of three wickets.
After looking at the overcast conditions up in the sky, Rohit Sharma won the toss and elected to bowl first, citing the soft pitch and some grass on it. This was the first time since 2015 that India opted to bowl first in a home test after winning the toss. Rohit named an unchanged XI, meaning India continued with the three seamers that won them the Chennai Test.
However, Bangladesh read the pitch differently to India, as Najmul Hossain Shanto said he wanted to bat first anyway, and he went with three spinners. Only time will tell which captain and team read the pitch correctly.
Three Bangladesh batters got starts today, but two of them are back in the dressing room. For India, Akash Deep was the standout bowler in the first session. Not much play was possible in the second session, and the third session didn’t happen.
IND vs BAN 2nd Test Day 1 Report
The first session of day 1 was proper attritional Test cricket, as the batters had to wait for the loose balls to collect their runs. In the morning session, Bangladesh scored 74 runs for two wickets in 26 overs, with the Indian pacers doing plenty of talking with the ball.
Rohit’s decision to bowl first was based on the conditions, which shone through as Mohammed Siraj and Jasprit Bumrah moved the ball considerably off the surface, although they didn’t target the stumps as much as they should have. They kept Zakir Hasan tied down for zero runs, and the reward came for Akash Deep, who had Hasan poking an outside-off-stump delivery to gully, where Yashasvi Jaiswal took a stunning low catch.
Unlike his opening partner, Shadman Islam was positive and creamed 24 runs off 36 balls but fell to Deep, who set him up brilliantly with deliveries that seamed away before sending an in-seamer to rap on his pads. Captain Najmul Hossain Shanto played some attractive drives to both the pacers and then swept R Ashwin well.
After lunch, the match went into a snoozefest as the ball, as expected, kept low and there wasn’t enough pace in the surface for the Indian pacers to trouble the batters. The breakthrough came from off-spinner R Ashwin, who broke the 51-run stand between Shanto and Mominul Haque by dismissing the Bangladeshi captain via an LBW.
Haque, however, suddenly turned into an aggressor and creamed a few boundaries off Bumrah and Deep. Before India could put pressure on Haque and new batter Mushfiqur Rahim, rain arrived and no more play could happen.
The forecast for tomorrow also isn’t great. There could be a delayed start, rain interruptions, and early stumps tomorrow as well. Bad light, too, is a factor in Kanpur. The forecast for the first three days of this Test match is distressing; however, it is much better for the last two days. India would be hoping that they get enough time to force a result as this Test is part of the World Test Championship.
