IND vs BAN 1st Test Day 1 Report: Chennai’s local boy R Ashwin and the Chennai Super Kings star Ravindra Jadeja led the Indian cricket team into a strong position by the end of day 1 of the India vs Bangladesh 1st test.
India kicked off their home season against Bangladesh, who are on a high after recording a historic maiden Test series win in Pakistan. They threatened to do something similar in India when Hasan Mahmud nipped out Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, and Virat Kohli for single-digit scores inside the first 10 overs of India’s first innings.
Rishabh Pant and Yashasvi Jaiswal rebuilt India’s innings but Mahmud returned to dismiss Pant before Nahid Rana and Mehidy Hasan Miraz removed Jaiswal and KL Rahul, respectively. However, India’s lower order once again came to the rescue as Ashwin notched up his sixth Test century, while Jadeja recorded a half-century and is moving toward his fifth Test ton.
On day 1, 80 overs were bowled, 10 overs fewer than what it should have been, and India scored 339/6 with Ashwin unbeaten on 102 and Jadeja unbeaten on 86.
IND vs BAN 1st Test Day 1 Report:
The game started with some surprises. For the first time in seven years, a captain winning the toss in a Test match in India against India elected to bowl first. Najmul Hossain Shanto inserted India in, citing the moisture and overcast conditions. Rohit Sharma, the Indian captain, said he too would have bowled first. Both captains confirmed that they have picked three pacers in their XIs.
The pitch is a red soil one with extra pace, bounce, and carry in it. All of it was shown in the first hour of play. Shanto’s decision to bowl first was vindicated early on when Mahmud dismissed Rohit, Gill, and Kohli with his medium pace, but it was his little seam movement that troubled the Indians. Rohit edged to first slip to a ball that seamed away; Gill feathered down the leg side after struggling in his eight-ball stay. Kohli looked intenful, but a booming drive to a full delivery that seamed just a bit away caught his outside edge and was caught easily by wicketkeeper Liton Das.
Pant and Jaiswal produced a counter-attacking partnership of 62 runs as they drove and cut. But, after lunch, Pant played one too many cut shots and edged Mahmud to Das. Bangladesh pounced further on the hosts. After scoring 56 runs, Jaiswal nicked young speedster Nahid Rana to first slip before Rahul was caught at short leg off Miraz, leaving India reeling at 144/6.
From thereon, it was the Jadeja-Ashwin show. Over the years, while the Indian fans have enjoyed their partnership with the ball, today it was with the bat.
While Jadeja settled in, Ashwin was on the attack mode straightaway, not allowing the Bangladeshi bowlers to settle against him. He played elegantly through the covers, mid-wicket, and square leg and even used his feet. He reached his fifty in 58 balls. After taking down the spinners, he ramped Rana for a delicious boundary.
The duo slogged the Bangladeshi spinners on the leg side and hammered them down the ground. Just before stumps, Ashwin reached his century, and the home crowd celebrated it wildly before Jadeja got into the 80s.
