Ian Healy On India Traning Behind Closed Doors: Former Australian cricketer Ian Healy has suggested the Indian Cricket Team not have their practice sessions in the country behind closed doors, as this might make this tour an unhappy one for the side.
The Indian squad has arrived Down Under in the past few days for the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy, which will be a five-match Test series between the two biggest teams in the world. Naturally, with arguably the biggest and certainly the most important (in regards to the WTC) Test series in the world right around the corner, the team has been the talk of the town and is the subject of a lot of Australian media coverage.
The first match of the series will commence on November 22 and will be played in Perth’s Optus Stadium. So, as the Indians have arrived in the country well over a week before the start of the series, the team has booked the WACA Stadium in Perth.
But having booked a whole stadium for about a week or so is not enough. The Indian team is also practising behind closed doors. This means that fans are barred from watching the team practice, and the media cannot view it as well.

Ian Healy, who was a wicketkeeper-batter for the Australian Cricket Team in the late 80s and the 90s, has now discussed how the Aussies used to do the same thing when they visited India during his playing days. However, the 60-year-old believes that interacting with the fans and taking part in the media cycle would make the tour much happier and tolerable for the visiting team. He said this while speaking on SENQ Breakfast,
“India is now doing in Australia what Australia used to do in India, Pakistan, and sometimes Sri Lanka—just not embracing the whole experience and the early media,” he said. “If you sort of open yourself to media opportunities and do them and meet the Australian public and the many Indians that are out here – it goes a long way to a much happier tour.”
But despite his recommendation, Healy understood how the team wanted to be in their safe space for this long and challenging tour and that that safe space might just be training and practising.
“There are extra reasons why India locked themselves away; we just cannot imagine the clambering throng that they have to cope with day in, day out. So maybe training is their safe space, and they’ve got to get a fair few things done, and they want to do it away from the prying eyes,” he added.
The Indian Cricket Team has defeated Australia on their last two tours away. This time around, the team will depend on their aging starts, especially Virat Kohli and captain Rohit Sharma.
As discussed before, the first match will start on November 22 in Perth. Following that, the second Test will commence on December 6 in the Adelaide Oval, the third will be at the Gabba in Brisbane from December 14, and the fourth match will start on December 26 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. The fifth and final Test, which will start on January 3, 2025, will be played at the Sydney Cricket Ground.
