How Good Was MS Dhoni As An IPL Captain?: It was announced by the Chennai Super Kings today that Mahendra Singh Dhoni will not captain the side in the 2024 season of the Indian Premier League. The news of Ruturaj Gaikwad replacing him as the team captain came as a shock to many
What we can do now is look at MS Dhoni’s captaincy career in the IPL and look at how one of the most highly-rated captains in cricket faired in the premier franchise cricket league in the world.
How Good Was MS Dhoni As An IPL Captain?
MS Dhoni Captaincy Records in IPL: Let’s first start with his season-wise records. The 42-year-old has won a whopping five IPL titles, all as captain. He was the first captain to win two IPLs and to do so back-to-back when he led CSK to triumph in 2010 and 2011.
As a captain, Dhoni has won the league five times, has reached the final a further five times, and has made the playoffs two other times. He reached the final in 2017 with Rising Pune Supergiants in the years when CSK were suspended, but Steve Smith was the team captain that season.

Unlike other long-time captains like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma who grew into captaincy after years of playing in the league, MS Dhoni has been a captain since day 1. Captain of team India at the time, the Jharkhand-based player was picked as the captain of the CSK in 2008.
Due to him being a captain for so long, MS has the most matches as a captain in the IPL, having led a team in 226 matches, winning 133 of those. Rohit Sharma is second on the list with 158.
For anyone who has been a captain for over a season, he is the second most successful IPL captain in terms of win/loss ratio. Dhoni has won a staggering 59.37% of his matches. The only person ahead of him in that stat is Hardik Pandya with 70%, who has only captained 31 IPL matches.
As for his time at CSK, there have been only 14 matches where he has not captained. Throughout the years, Suresh Raina has been a stand-in and captained for 6 matches. In 2022, CSK looked to replace Dhoni as captain and picked Ravindra Jadeja for the job. That backfired so hard that MS was appointed back as the captain mid-season.
MS Dhoni no longer being the CSK captain is the end of an era, especially when Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma are no longer captains too. This will be the first IPL season when none of those three are IPL captains.
Ruturaj Gaikwad’s Chennai Super Kings will kick off IPL 2024 when they take on Royal Challengers Bengaluru on March 22 in Chennai’s MA Chidambaram Stadium.
