How can RCB qualify for playoffs: The IPL 2024 season is in the final stages of its league phase round, with 62 matches done and dusted and only 8 games left before we have our final four teams and standings ahead of the playoffs.
While in the first half of the season, a few teams looked to have been running away from the rest, the bottom-table teams have caught up, in particular Royal Challengers Bengaluru.
RCB’s five-match winning streak, which followed six consecutive losses, along with some recent losses for Chennai Super Kings, Rajasthan Royals, and Sunrisers Hyderabad, have opened up the table.
With eight games to go, we have only one playoff spot confirmed—that of the Kolkata Knight Riders—and they are yet to confirm a top-two spot, and two teams, the Mumbai Indians and Punjab Kings, are eliminated.
A key reason the table is still wide open with three spots up for grabs is RCB’s re-surge in their last five matches, which have virtually been must-win games for Faf du Plessis’ side. Their latest victory, in their 13th game of the season, came against Delhi Capitals. That they won by a significant margin of 47 runs helped their net run rate, which would be vital should they defeat CSK in their last match and other results go in their favor.
RCB and CSK’s last match is on May 18 at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium. RCB have 12 points in 13 games.
KKR have 18 points, RR have 16 points, CSK have 14 points, SRH have 14 points in 12 games, and LSG have 12 points in 12 games.
How can RCB qualify for playoffs?
For RCB to reach the playoffs, they must defeat CSK, which will take them to 14 points, and hope that both LSG and SRH don’t reach 16 points; otherwise, RCB will be knocked out. If either LSG or SRH doesn’t reach 16 points, then RCB will only need to defeat CSK by a margin by which they move ahead of CSK’s net run rate to qualify for the playoffs.
