Highest Wicket Takers In T20 World Cup: We are less than 24 hours away from the start of the 2024 T20 World Cup. So let us look back at some of the greatest bowlers in the history of the competition.
Following are the three bowlers with the most wickets in tournament history, An old saying in cricket goes that despite T20 cricket being a batter’s game, it is the bowlers that win you tournaments.
And this will be seen in this list as the players mentioned here were either part of tournament-winning teams, or have played a lot of cricket.
With that being said, here are the top 3 bowlers with the most in the history of the T20 World Cup
Highest Wicket Takers In T20 World Cup
3) Lasith Malinga
An absolute legend of T20 cricket, Lasith Malinga has torn it down for his country and several franchises across the world. Considered by many to be one of the finest bowlers of the 21st century, Malinga had a role in defining how this format was to be played in its early stages.
Having played six T20 World Cups from 2007 to 2016, Malinga has taken 38 wickets in 31 matches in the tournament.
But it doesn’t end here. Not only is Lasith Malinga the highest wicket-taker in the T20 World Cup, but he also captained Sri Lanka to their only World Cup win in 2014.

2) Shahid Afridi
Shahid Afridi was arguably the best player of what one could argue was the best team in the beginning years of the T20 World Cup – Pakistan. In the first four editions of the tournament, the Men in Green finished runner-up in 2007, won it all in 2009, and reached the semifinals in 2010 and 2012.
Afridi was one of the flashiest players in world cricket in the 2000s and early 2010s. A brilliant allrounder, Afridi was a devastating leg-spinner. He is second in the list of highest wicket-takers in tournament history with 39 scalps in 34 matches.
Afridi was also the player of the tournament for the 2007 T20 World Cup. In that tournament, he took 12 wickets and scored 91 runs en route to the final.
1) Shakib Al Hasan
Shakib Al Hasan is not a part of a T20 World Cup-winning nation, in fact, Bangladesh has never even made it past the second round of the tournament. So Shakib being on top of the wicket-takers chart shows two things about the star allrounder. First is his absolute quality on the cricket field, and second is his longevity in the sport.
Shakib has had a long international career. Having made his debut for Bangladesh in 2006, he has played every edition of the T20 World Cup so far and will be appearing in the 2024 tournament as well. He has played 36 matches in the tournament, the second-most appearances in the T20 WC.
As for his quality, 47 wickets in 36 games is a testament to his bowling ability. But he is equally impressive with the bat, as his 742 runs in the competition puts him eighth in the list of highest run scorers.
Considered by some to be the greatest allrounder in the 21st century, Shakib being the highest wicket-taker in the T20 World Cups just shows how influential he has been in this format of the sport.
