Highest Scores On ODI Debut: In an incredible display of batsmanship on his ODI debut, South Africa’s Matthew Breetzke has broken the record for the highest individual score by a batsman on his ODI debut!
Breetzke made his ODI debut against New Zealand at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore on February 10, 2025. This is the second match of the ongoing tri-series between New Zealand, South Africa, and hosts Pakistan.
South Africa fielded an inexperienced line-up that consisted of four debutants due to the first-choice players being rested as this series is sandwiched between the SA20 and the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.
One of the debutants, Breetzke, made a huge impact as he recorded a century. And not just a century, Breetzke plundered 150 runs, which is the most a batsman has ever made on his ODI debut.

Breetzke became only the fourth South African batsman to hit a century on his ODI debut, following Colin Ingram, Temba Bavuma, and Reeza Hendricks.
Breetzke’s innings of 150 runs off 148 balls included 11 fours and five sixes. Wiaan Mulder scored 64 runs off 60 balls as the pair’s onslaught in the death overs took South Africa’s total to 302.
Speaking after his record-breaking century, Matthew Breetzke said,
“I am a bit tired, but I just hope we can get the win; that’s the only thing in my mind. It was very tricky this morning; the pitch was quite tacky, and O’Rourke was really tough to face. My mindset was to just bat as long as possible.”
