Heinrich Klaasen is a South African cricketer who played for the South Africa national cricket team between 2018 and 2025. He also briefly captained the team in T20I matches. He first entered the national team as an injury replacement for Quinton de Kock, opening the batting. Later he became a regular middle-order batter in white-ball cricket.
Klaasen studied at Menlopark High School and the University of Pretoria. He made his first-class debut for Northerns in the 2012–13 season and averaged 42.58 in the provincial three-day competition. In February 2017 he scored 195 for Titans against Dolphins in a first-class match.
In the Indian Premier League 2023 season he had a strike rate of 191 and an average of 132 against spin, which made him highly valuable for T20 franchise teams. He made his Test debut in 2019, although he had fewer opportunities in that format. In 2021 he received his first national contract and also captained a second-string South African T20I side during a tour of Pakistan.

Heinrich Klaasen Personal Life
Heinrich Klaasen decided to retire from international cricket in July 2025 at the age of 33. He said the decision was mainly because of family reasons. Traveling for international matches had become difficult, and he wanted to spend more time with his family.
Even after leaving the national team, Klaasen said he would continue playing franchise cricket for a few more years. He plans to keep playing in leagues like the Indian Premier League, SA20, Major League Cricket, and The Hundred.
Klaasen played his final international match for South Africa national cricket team in March 2025, when South Africa faced New Zealand national cricket team in the semifinal of the ICC Champions Trophy.
In franchise cricket, Klaasen has been an important player for Sunrisers Hyderabad, and he said the IPL helped him grow both as a player and as a person. He also mentioned David Miller as one of the players who influenced his approach to the game.
Klaasen has said that when his playing career finally ends, he may stay involved in cricket as a coach or mentor to help younger players.
Heinrich Klaasen Contract
Heinrich Klaasen was not included in the central contracts list for the 2025–26 season announced by Cricket South Africa. The board gave contracts to 20 players, but Klaasen’s name was missing.
One reason is that Klaasen retired from Test cricket in January 2024. After leaving the longest format, he has focused mainly on white-ball cricket and T20 leagues around the world. Because of this, there are reports that he may prefer more freedom to play franchise tournaments instead of being tied to a full national contract.
Since retiring from Tests, Klaasen has played in several leagues, including the Indian Premier League, Major League Cricket, and SA20. He is also expected to take part in The Hundred for Manchester Originals.
