After a long eight-year tenure as manager of England’s men’s football team, Gareth Southgate decided to step down from the role. The decision came after a dreadful defeat at the second consecutive Euro final, and this time it was against Spain.
Southgate’s run as England manager has always been controversial. The manager who statistically could be one of England’s greatest managers had been hunted for the style of play and lack of awareness in using great talents and favoritism.
Southgate was successful in leading England to three semifinals in the major tournaments. His team reached the final of the last two Euros but failed to win the trophy by losing to Italy and Spain, respectively. This is appreciation-worthy, but he rather got a lot of backlash, especially in this Euro.
England came to the Euros as the favorites, as the squad they had was arguably the best in the tournament. From the likes of Phil Foden, Jude Bellingham, Xaka, Riyas Mehrez, and the list goes on, they were all in the shadows of their club versions. Not playing a lot of deservingly in the XI also invited criticism from the fans.
The England FA had decided to extend Southgate’s contract until 2026, just before the Euro 2024 Final. This would have enabled Southgate to lead the side in the FIFA World Cup 2026, which will be played in North America. But after a defensive approach with the best attacking players in the squad, Southgate’s Egland succumbed in front of a young, relishing Spain. This had led to a wide outrage from the fans, including famous football analyst Mark Goldbridge.
Harry Kane Sends Farewell Message to Southgate
As the Southgate steps down from England’s hot seat, captain Harry Kane took to Instagram to write a heartfelt message to the coach.
“Boss. Thank you for everything you have done for me and our country! You have been one of England’s greatest-ever managers and it has been a pleasure to have served as your captain throughout. You helped our nation connect and believe in our team again. There have been so many highlights and we’ve made memories that will last forever! Good luck with your next chapter and I’m sure we’ll see each other around. Thanks, Boss!”
