Gurbaz had to choose KKR over his ill mother: Ramanullah Gurbaz was in the hospital with his ill mother when he got a call from the Kolkata Knight Riders. Riders said that they want him as English cricketer Phil Salt left home for international duties. Gurbaz had a choice. He could either stay with his mother or join the other ‘family’, i.e., KKR, and help them out. Gurbaz chose the latter, and now he is in the IPL 2024 final.

Gurbaz called the decision ‘difficult’. But though he is in the heat of the moment playing difficult games for KKR, the player calls his mother every day to talk to her and inquire about her wellness. She is still under treatment, said the right-handed batter.
“My mother is still ill. I was there (in Afghanistan). I received a call from KKR as soon as Phil Salt departed. ‘Gurbaz, we’ll need you; what is the situation now?’ they contacted me. I agreed to be here. I talk to my mother every day while she is still in the hospital undergoing treatment. Well, KKR is also my family. I was needed here. I returned from Afghanistan. It’s difficult, but I must persist,” said Gurbaz.
Gurbaz’s first game in 2024 was the hottest one: Qualifier 1 against the blazing Sunrisers Hyderabad. After the bowlers tied down the SRH batters for 159 runs, Gurbaz gave KKR a thunderous start by hitting 23 runs from 14 balls. KKR won the game by 8 wickets and reached the final of the TATA IPL’24. They will wait for the Qualifier 2 winners to play in the final on May 26 in Cheppauk.
