Named after former Australian captain Allan Border and former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar, this is a bi-annual four-match Test series between two of the biggest teams in world cricket. In terms of the balance of power in world cricket, this might be the most crucial test series in the world.
India has been victorious in the last four editions of this series, two of which have taken place in Australia. Before 2016-17, both teams used to win at their home. But since then, it is the Men in Blue who have had a strong hold on the trophy.

The next edition of the series will be the first time since 1991-92 that the two teams will play in a five-Test series. Being played in Australia once again, the first game will commence on November 22 and will be played in Perth’s Optus (Perth) Stadium. The second, from December 6th, will be played in the Adelaide Oval. The third Test will be played at The Gabba in Brisbane, while the fourth will be a Boxing Day Test from December 26 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). The fifth and final Test will be played at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) from January 3, 2025.
India and Australia are currently the top two teams in the 2023-25 World Test Championship. With the final being played in the summer of 2025, this series will play a massive role in both of these sides’ final aspirations, with the series winner all but confirming their place in the top two.

Two of the biggest names in the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy will be India’s Virat Kohli and Australia’s Steve Smith. Two of the highest run scorers in the series history, the two might just be playing in their last BGT in Australia. Both of these batters, part of the hallowed ‘Fab-4’, had their best series in 2014-15. While Kohli scored a mammoth 692 runs in four matches, Smith had arguably the greatest Test series for one batter, scoring 769 runs in eight innings.

Glenn Maxwell, who will most likely be part of the Baggy Greens squad for the series, recently told Star Sports in a conversation that he is looking forward to the Kohli vs Smith battle, and one of the two veteran stars is bound to have an amazing series. Maxwell said,
“I think probably the way that the two superstar batters, Steve Smith and Virat Kohli, probably head-to-head, seeing how their dominance, I suppose, is asserted on the series and how much of an influence that has on who takes home the Border Gavaskar Trophy. One of those two is going to make a lot of runs, if not both of them and it’s going to be pretty exciting to watch the two of the finest players of our generation go head-to-head.”
Steve Smith chimed into the conversation as well, telling Star Sports that he is looking forward to facing Virat on the field once again.
“I believe Virat Kohli is Australian in thoughts and action. The way he gets into it at all the way gets into the challenge and tries to get on top of the opposition. He’s probably the most Australian of the Indian players, I’d say. We get on quite well, share messages every now and again. Look, he’s a great guy and obviously a wonderful player. So, it’s going to be nice to come up against him again this summer,” he said.
Virat Kohli is in the India squad for the upcoming games against Bangladesh and will also likely play against New Zealand this year. So he will come into the Border Gavaskar Trophy with some practice under his belt. On the other hand, Australia will not play any more Tests before the series against India. So some of their Test-only players might come into it a little rusty.
