Shubman Gill Leads IND To 1st Edgbaston Test Win: The Indian bowling unit, led by pacer Akash Deep, continued their fine performance in this match to bowl England out for 271 as India won this match by 336 runs. This was India’s first Test win at Edgbaston in their ninth attempt.
Today was Day Five of the 2nd England vs India Test match of the ongoing five-game Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. The match was played at Edgbaston Cricket Ground in Birmingham and saw the home side win the toss and decide to bowl first on a batting-friendly pitch.

On the first day, KL Rahul departed for cheap before Yashasvi Jaiswal and Karun Nair looked to stabilise the innings. However, after getting a decent start, Nair got out for 31. Jaiswal then batted well with captain Shubman Gill, making 87 before getting out. Rishabh Pant didn’t score too many runs on the day. And when Nitish Kumar Reddy got out for one and the team score was 211/5, the threat of a collapse loomed over the Men in Blue.
But then, Gill, along with Ravindra Jadeja, decided to stand firm on the pitch. While the veteran all-rounder played a supporting role, the skipper was the one making big runs. After scoring a century in the first match of the series, he scored another on the first day of this game. The day’s play ended at 310/5.
In the first session of the second day, Gill reached the 150-run mark. By lunch, India had made over 400 runs. And while Jadeja got out for 89, Washington Sundar now took the responsibility of supporting his captain. By the end of another session, Shubman had made 200 runs, and the team had scored 500 runs.
The first Indian inning ended at 587. Gill made 269 runs, which is not only his highest score as an Indian captain in Tests, but it is also the highest score by an Indian batter in SENA countries.
Battling for the last hour on Day Two, England lost three quick wickets and ended on 77/3 with Harry Brook and Joe Root on strike.

At the very start of Day Three, in just the second over of the day, Mohammed Siraj dismissed Root and captain Ben Stokes on consecutive balls as the English lost half their side before making 100 runs. But then, Harry Brook and Jamie Smith decided that the two would change the course of this match and just stood firm on the crease, making quick runs and playing aggressive shots.
The two batters had a 300+ run partnership, both making over 150 runs, and saved their team from a follow-on. But as soon as Brook got out of 158, the tail collapsed behind him, with the last four wickets falling for 12 runs. After England got out for 407 and trailed by 180 runs, India batted for the second time, ending day three on 64/1.
Karun failed to score big once again in this series. But then, KL Rahul and Shubman Gill batted together for a while, with Rahul scoring a half-century before getting out. After KL’s dismissal, Rishabh Pant formed a solid 110-run partnership with the skipper and scored a half-century of his own. And then Ravindra Jadeja did the same, a big partnership and a half-ton.
All this time, Gill was playing like he was in a limited-overs game, scoring at almost run-a-ball. He became only the ninth player in Test history to make a 200 and a hundred in a single match. He then went one step ahead and made it a 150, becoming the first player to score a 200 and a 150 in a single match. Soon after he got out for 161, India declared their inning for 427/6, with a 607-run lead.
With such a massive target on board, the English top order crumbled. Losing three wickets for 50 runs and ending the day on 72/3.
At the start of Day Five, India has a very simple goal: to take seven wickets and win the match. But earlier in the day, it had rained heavily in Birmingham. And hence, there was a delay in starting the match. But as soon as the proceedings commenced, the Men in Blue started dominating. Two wickets fell within 10 overs of the start, and the match was all but done for.

Jamie Smith (88), captain Ben Stokes (33), and Brydon Carse (38) provided some resistance. However, that was not enough. And with England not looking to play for a draw, India picked wickets at regular intervals, bowling the English out for 271 and winning the match by 336 runs.
There were a lot of good performances in the second England vs India match. Jamie Smith and Harry Brook scored 150s, Mohammed Siraj took six wickets in the first inning, while Akash Deep took six in the second inning and 10 in the whole match. But the player of the match was clearly the Indian Cricket Team captain, Shubman Gill, who made 430 runs across two innings, the second-highest total by a player in Test cricket.
Meanwhile, in their ninth match at this venue, India won a Test at Edgbaston for the first time. And after a disappointing loss at Headingley last month, this result ties this five-match England vs India series 1-1. The third Test, which will be played at the Lord’s Cricket Ground in London, will commence on June 10 with the two teams looking to gain an edge in this series.
