Gavi Returns With a Standing Ovation: Barcelona’s young star Gavi returned to the playing field after a long layoff due to injuries. The 20-year-old steeped into the ground in Barcelona’s last match in La Liga against Sevilla at the Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys.
Gavi Returns With a Standing Ovation and Captains Arm Band
Gavi came on at the pitch in the 83rd minute as a substitute, replacing Pedri. Pedri while coming off took his captain’s armband and wrapped it around the arm of Gavi as a sign of respect. The entire stadium stood up to applaud and welcome the midfielder.
After the match, Gavi spoke to the reporters, revealing how happy he was on his return. The youngster added that he had been dreaming about the moment for months. Gavi had been out of the football pitch since November 2023 as he got injured on his anterior cruciate ligament.
“I’m very happy to be back with the team. I’ve been dreaming about this moment for many months, and I’m grateful to everyone because they’ve made it much easier for me. The worst thing is not playing with the team,” Gavi said to the reporters.
“Watching the team from the outside is very hard, and you have to enjoy every moment and value things. I feel very lucky to be here today. It’s my life and what I’ve been doing all my life, and I missed it. I feel very lucky. When all the fans and teammates love and value you, you feel very lucky.”
In the match, Barcelona thumped Sevilla 5-1 to keep the lead on top of the La Liga table. Robert Lewandowski and Pablo Torre scored twice in the match, while Pedri, who was called off for Gavi, netted once.
Barca has 27 points from 10 matches, 3 more than their arch-rivals Real Madrid, with whom they will play the much anticipated El Clasico next Sunday. Before that, the Catalans have a fiery match against Bayern Munich on Thursday in the UEFA Champions League.
