Gautam Gambhir doesn’t wish to have a strict coach-player relationship in the Indian dressing room. Instead, the new India head coach asserted the importance of giving the players full freedom.
In his first press conference as India’s new head coach, before departing for Sri Lanka, Gambhir spoke about his modus operandi as a coach, something which he adopted while propelling Kolkata Knight Riders to the IPL 2024 title in the role of a mentor.
On Monday, Gambhir said,
“It is very simple. It is important to give players freedom – that’s what I believe in – and not have a relationship of a head coach and a player.”

I Am Taking Over A Very, Very Successful Team – Gautam Gambhir
Gambhir, a two-time World Cup winner with India and a two-time IPL winning captain with KKR, admitted that he’s taking a highly successful Indian team from his predecessor, Rahul Dravid, under whom India reached the final of ICC World Test Championship, World Cup 2023, and T20 World Cup 2024, winning the T20 WC recently in Barbados.
The 42-year-old India head coach aims to run things in an uncomplicated and a smooth manner.
“The best relationship is one built on trust. The most important thing is they’ll always have my backing. I don’t complicate too many things. I am taking over a very, very successful team – India are T20 world champions, have been runners-up in the World Test Championship and the 50-overs World Cup,” he added.
India will tour Sri Lanka for three T20Is and as many ODIs before hosting Bangladesh and New Zealand for Test matches.
The first major assignment of Gambhir will come at the end of the year in Australia in a five-match Test series.
Gambhir asserted,
“A happy dressing room is a winning dressing room. Ultimately it is the players’ team, the support staff is there to try and get the maximum out of their potential.”
