Former Indian cricketer and World Cup winner Gautam Gambhir has now been officially announced as the new head coach of the Indian National Cricket Team, and the recruitment will come into effect following the team’s recent tour to Zimbabwe.
Gambir, who is a former ODI and T20 World Cup winner with India, was a regular for the national team across all formats in his playing days. Not only that, but he was also a successful captain, winning two IPL trophies with the Kolkata Knight Riders while leading the side in 2012 and 2014.
After hanging up his boots, the Delhi-based cricketer looked to make his name in multiple avenues. First, he won the Lok Sabha seat from East Delhi while representing the Bhartiya Janta Party in the 2019 general elections. He then took up coaching and mentoring, becoming the mentor of the newly formed franchise, the Lucknow Super Giants, in 2022, mentoring the team to two consecutive playoff qualifications.

Most recently, the 42-year-old returned to the Knight Riders, becoming KKR’s mentor ahead of the 2024 season. In what was the highest-scoring season of the league ever, the dominant Kolkata Knight Riders defeated Sunrisers Hyderabad in the final to pick up their third IPL title, the first since the two won under Gambhir’s captaincy.
Following a successful IPL season, Gautam Gambhir will now take the reigns of the Indian cricket team, becoming a national team head coach for the first time in his career. He will replace Rahul Dravid for the post, who ended his successful tenure as India’s coach by winning the 2024 T20 World Cup.
