India swept away Sri Lanka 4-0 in the T20I series that ended on Tuesday, July 30. Though the first 3 matches were comfortable for the visitors, they faced the scare of defeat in the final game.
Chasing down India’s score of 139, Sri Lanka got close and needed just 9 runs from the last 12 deliveries. The quick strategic decision from captain Suryakumar Yadav to give the ball to Rinku Singh for the 19th over turned the match upside down. The right-handed bowler took two wickets in the over and later left the match tied as Suryakumar took another 2 wickets in the ultimate over. India finally won in the super over after a brilliant bowling performance by Washington Sundar.

After the match, the new head coach of the team, Gautam Gambhir, made a speech in the dressing room. Gambhir congratulated the team for performing well but also reminded the players that the team still has to get better to play on a pitch like the one in Tuesday’s game.
“Guys, congratulations on a great series win. Congratulations to Surya as well, outstanding captaincy, and more importantly, with the bat as well. Guys, I asked for something before the start of the game and you absolutely delivered it.”
“We keep getting, we keep improving our skills as well because we need to still get better on playing on wickets like these because we might end up getting these kind of wickets. So, we should first assess the situation and conditions really quickly, and what is the par score as well. There is a lot of learning from this game but more important than not this is a great series win.”
