Gambhir Says this Player is His Greatest Regret: Gautam Gambhir is an integral part of Kolkata Knight Riders’ history in the IPL, currently as a mentor and previously as a winning captain. Under him, KKR had kissed the trophy twice.
Gambhir, while talking about the successive stints he had at KKR, opened up about his biggest regret during the time. If you think it is about the trophies he could have won, you would be mistaken.
Being a captain, managing a talent-studded squad is a very difficult job. Giving fair opportunities to every player is a mammoth task. Sometimes the player you kept on your sidelines might thrive after leaving your team. Something like this has happened to Gambhir, and he regrets it to this day.

The lead of this story is Suryakumar Yadav, who is considered one of the best T20 batters in the world. The 33-year-old had his time in Gambhir’s KKR from 2014–2017. By not getting enough opportunities in KKR, SKY was bought by the Mumbai Indians in 2018, and this changed his career. He grew into a top batter and also became an integral part of Team India.
Gambhir could only remember Suryakumar with regrets. He admits that he couldn’t give SKY enough chances to bring out his fullest potential.
“The role of a leader is to find the most amazing potential and showcase it to the world. If there is one thing I regret from my seven years as captain, it is that neither I nor the squad were able to fully utilise Suryakumar Yadav,” he said.
Suryakumar is lethal at top order. But KKR used him as a number 7, which was not so natural for him.
“The reason was the combination. At No. 3, you can only play one person. As a leader, you also need to consider the other ten players in the starting lineup. Although he was just as good at No. 7, he would have been far more dangerous at No. 3,” he added.
Gambhir also gives credit to SKY for being a team player.
“He was a team player as well. While anyone may play well, being a good team player is a great challenge. He always had a smile on his face and was eager to contribute to the team, whether you benched him or played him. For this reason, we named him the vice captain,” he concluded.
