Former Manchester United Star Joins AEK Athens: Former Manchester United star Anthony Martial has finally found a new club two months after the end of his contract. He has joined Greek club AEK Athens, which means that he will be playing outside the top five European leagues for the first time in his career.
The French attacker was signed by the Red Devils in 2015 at the age of 19 from Monaco for a fee of 36 million Euros. The hype behind this new and young talent was massive. So much so that United even had the infamous “Ballon d’Or clause” in his contract, which meant that the club would pay Monaco an additional fee if Martial ended up winning the award.
His first few seasons in England were promising. He scored a brilliant goal in his debut against. In his first season, he scored 11 and assisted 4 goals in 31 Premier League games. And even though his numbers dipped over the next couple of seasons, he picked his form up from 2018 to 2020. In the two seasons in this time span, he scored 27 goals and assisted eight in 59 PL games.
But things changed after COVID. Not only did his playing time decrease, but his output on the field fell drastically as well. At the time his contract ended in June 2024, he was making sporadic appearances for the team and has been out of plans of the club for multiple seasons. In the 2023-24 season, he just scored two goals in 19 games across all competitions.
