Football Pundit On Van Dijk Liverpool Contract: Football pundit Michael Dawson believes that English Premier League club Liverpool needs to agree to a new contract with star defender Virgil van Dijk as soon as possible if they don’t want to lose him to a rival team.
Van Dijk has been one of, if not the best defenders in the world for a few years now. Playing a vital role in the resurgence of The Reds into a PL and UEFA Champions League winner, the Dutch defender came second in the 2019 Ballon d’Or ranking, with many believing he should have received the award over winner Lionel Messi.
In the years since, while he has not reached that peak, he is still among the best footballers on the planet, with him being a part of several Team of the Seasons. At 33 years of age, he is still solid as a rock. And his dribbling ability, which put him over several of his fellow defenders, is still as fresh as it was five years ago.
Having arrived from Liverpool for over 84 million euros, he is one of the very few players to have proven more than worth their high transfer value. That is even more surprising, seeing as he is a defender.
The team from Anfield is having some trouble in the ongoing transfer window. While they finished third in the Premier League last season, they were clearly a rung below the champions Manchester City and runner-ups Arsenal. Seeing that, fans believed that there were a few signings in order to keep up with the top two teams in the table.
But new manager Arne Slot, who replaced the legendary Jurgen Klopp, has not signed even a single player in the summer transfer window. In fact, the club from Merseyside is the only PL team to have not made a signing in the current transfer window with only days remaining.
So now, the priority is to keep their biggest stars happy and in contract. Van Dijk’s contract is set to expire in June 2025, which gives the club less than a year to give him a new contract that is satisfactory for the defender.
Football Pundit On Van Dijk Liverpool Contract
Michael Dawson, who played for several English clubs and retired only a few years ago to become a football pundit, has now urged The Reds to give Virgil Van Dijk a new contract and tie him down for a few more years.
“Virgil van Dijk for me; anyone who knows me knows how much I love watching Virgil van Dijk. At the age of 33, he’s still a Rolls Royce, and for me, Liverpool have to get him tied down. The majority of football clubs would love to have him in (their) team,” Dawson told Sky Sports.
But Van Dijk is not the only major player from the club whose contract will expire next year, as Mohammed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold too will see their current contracts end in 2025.
Liverpool has gotten off to a solid start to the 2024-25 Premier League season. In the two games so far, they have defeated Ipswich Town and Brentford 2-0 each. They will face Manchester United in their next game on Sunday, September 1.
