Five-Match Card For Saturday Night Main Event: A full five-match card has been announced for WWE’s upcoming TV special, Saturday Night’s Main Event, which will emanate live from the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum in New York on December 14 (December 15 morning in India). There will be four championship matches on that card.
Saturday Night’s Main Event was a TV special that used to be broadcast in the prime time slot on NBC back in the golden age of pro wrestling in the mid-80s. Having been a semi-regular thing till 1992, since then, WWE has sporadically brought back the show.
But now, in 2024, it seems that SNME has been brought back like a premium live event; only, it will be broadcast on one of the biggest TV stations in the US in the most-watched time slot of the week.
With this being the case, WWE is treating the upcoming show like a PLE, which means there are big matches taking place at the event with massive storylines behind them. Like most WWE PLEs in years, this show will have five matches. Here are those matches as follows.
Five-Match Card For Saturday Night Main Event
Cody Rhodes (c) vs. Kevin Owens for the Undisputed WWE Championship: This is the most story-heavy match of this show. Cody and Kevin were friends when the two joined forces to topple The Bloodline in 2023 and 2024. But when Rhodes teamed up with former Bloodline leader Roman Reigns at the Bad Blood PLE, Owens attacked him backstage.
Now the two are in a heated feud, which even saw Kevin hit Randy Orton with a piledriver and injure him. Facing Kevin Owens might be Cody’s biggest title defence since winning the title at WrestleMania 40 against Reigns.
Gunther (c) vs. Finn Balor vs. Damien Priest for the World Heavyweight Championship: Yet another heated feud for a world title, Finn Balor betrayed Damien Priest and cost him the World Heavyweight Championship against Gunther at SummerSlam. He interfered again and cost Priest the title once more at Survivor Series.
Now, after Finn demanded and received a title match against the Ring General, Damien Priest has once again entered the situation, as this title match has now turned into a triple threat.
Liv Morgan (c) vs. Iyo Sky for the Women’s World Championship: While Liv Morgan might be in a blood feud with Rhea Ripley, it was Iyo Sky who recently won a No. 1 contenders’ match to challenge for the Women’s World Championship. The build-up to this match has involved Rhea as well. In what will be the last build-up to this match at this week’s Monday Night RAW, Iyo took out Liv as Ripley defeated Raquel Rodriguez, Liv Morgan’s bodyguard.
Bayley or Chelsea Green vs. Michin or Tiffany Stratton to crown the inaugural Women’s United States Champion: Last month, the Women’s United States Championship was introduced. To crown the first champion, a 12-women’s tournament was announced. So far – Bayley, Chelsea Green, Michin, and Tiffany Straton have made it to the semi-finals.
Bayley will face Chelsea, while Michin will face Stratton in the semis on the December 13 episode of SmackDown. The winners of those matches will make it to the final at Saturday Night’s Main Event.
Sami Zayn vs. Drew McIntyre: Yet another match that is happening because of the Bloodline saga that does not involve Roman Reigns or the Usos. Drew McIntyre, after taking a couple of month-long breaks following the feud of the year against CM Punk, returned to RAW last week to attack Jey Uso and Sami Zayn for teaming up with Roman and Punk at Survivor Series: War Games.
This match will just be step one in what might just be Drew McIntyre’s upcoming major feud against the OG Bloodline.
