Five Cricket Records That Will Never Be Broken: Cricket is one of the oldest modern-day sports, with its roots going back centuries. The game has been played in its current form for over a century. In all the time this sport has been played across the world, several records have been created and broken.
It is the law of the universe that most records are created to one day be broken. And while a record is broken almost every month in this sport, some records have been around for a long time. This, however, does not mean that these records will never be broken.
For the longest time, records like the most Test centuries by Sunil Gavaskar, the most ODI centuries by Sachin Tendulkar, and the fastest ODI century by Shahid Afridi stood apart, as it seemed that no one could even approach these stats. Not only were these broken, but demolished over time.
But today, we will be looking at five cricket records that will never be broken. Now, this is a bold claim to make, seeing how almost all records are made to be broken. But these ones have not only stood the test of time; it is quite difficult to imagine who will break these records and how.
Let us look at the top five unbreakable records in cricket:
Five Cricket Records That Will Never Be Broken
5) Most Centuries In International Cricket – Sachin Tendulkar (100)
Now, the inclusion of this record might be controversial. Ever since Sachin Tendulkar scored his 100th career century in 2012 against Bangladesh, fans have been speculating as to who will be the player to break that record.
For the longest time, Virat Kohli was expected to approach, if not break, this record. But with Virat in the twilight of his career and still 19 centuries away, it does not seem that this record will be broken anytime soon. And if a player like Virat Kohli, who has been so dominant for so long, cannot even come close to this record, who is to say it will ever be broken?
The likes of Kohli in ODIs and Joe Root in Tests have come close to, and even beaten in Virat’s case, Sachin’s record in those particular formats, but the way Tendulkar was equally dominant in Tests and ODIs in his time is a feat replicated by no one.

4) Most Wickets In International Cricket – Muttiah Muralidaran (1347)
Most Wickets: Unlike the previous record, no player has even come close to approaching this one. Sri Lankan spin legend Muttiah Muralidaran took 1347 wickets in his nearly two-decade-long international career. The only other player to take 1000 wickets is Shane Warne, who took 1001 scalps for Australia and is over 300 behind Murali.
The only modern player to have come anywhere near is England’s James Anderson, who took 991 wickets before retirement. In today’s batting-dominated cricket world, for a bowler to be consistently lethal for about 20 years is almost impossible, making this record all but impossible to break.
Another Muralidaran record that can be a part of this list is his Test wicket record of 800, as only Warne and Anderson have even breached the 700 mark and were over 90 wickets behind the Sri Lankan before retiring.
3) Highest Score In A Test Inning – Brian Lara (400*)
The only player to have scored 400 runs in a single inning, Brian Lara did so in 2004 against England. And so far, this has stood as the largest individual score in international cricket.
Some players might have neared this score in the past, like Matthew Hayden and Mahela Jayawardene, who have scored 280 and 374, respectively, but no one has stayed not out for long enough to reach 400.
This is also a record that has been made impossible to break due to the evolution of the game. Today, most teams, especially the big ones, do not look to draw matches. This makes it highly unlikely that a team will bat for long enough for one of the players to score 400 runs. The attacking approach has also made players get out a little quicker, making even scoring a 300 very rare.

2) Most Wickets In A Test Match – Jim Laker (19)
This record, in terms of achievements in a single match, might be the most incredible cricket record of all time. In the 4th Test of Australia’s 1956 tour to England, English off-spinner Jim Laker took a whopping 19 Australian wickets out of 20. It is understandable why no one has even come near this record in the almost 70 years since.
In the deep and massive history of Test cricket, only three players have ever taken 10 wickets in an inning. Taking nine wickets, while being a lot more common, too, has happened only 17 times. Jim Laker did both these things in a single match, taking nine wickets in the first and 10 wickets in the second inning.
Legendary English medium-pacer Sydney Barnes took 17 wickets in a match before World War 1 and is the closest one to this record. The only bowler to have even taken 15 wickets in a Test match in the 21st century is Harbhajan Singh, who did so against Australia in 2001.
1) Highest Career Average In International Cricket – Sir Don Bradman (99.94)
This is one of the most well-known yet still incredible records in cricket history. Legendary Australian batter Sir Donald Bradman retired from international cricket having scored 6996 runs in just 52 matches and 80 innings with a mind-boggling average of 99.94. His 29 Test centuries in 52 matches certainly helped the record.
But this record comes with a slight pinch, as the legendary batter needed only four runs in his final inning in 1948 against England to have a career average of 100, but he was dismissed for a duck and was thus left tantalisingly close to that three-digit mark. Legends say that Don Bradman was so emotional after the farewell he received before the inning that he was left teary-eyed and hence got bowled.
To put this record in perspective, the second player on the list of highest Test averages after Bradman is Australia’s Adam Voges, who had an average of 61.87 in 20 matches, almost 40 points below the Don. Only five players besides Bradman even have the Test average of 60.
