Ashutosh delivered for DC in their first game itself by smashing 66* off 31 balls against Lucknow Super Giants in Vizag on Monday, taking DC over the line with three balls to spare and only one wicket in hand.
Chasing a target of 210 on a good surface in Vizag, DC fumbled to 7/3 and then later to 113/6 when the game looked beyond their reach.
However, Ashutosh, who was 20 runs off 20 balls at one point, found an able ally in debutant Vipraj Nigam, who blasted 39 off 15 balls. Their partnership of 55 (22) kept DC alive in the run chase.
But while Ashutosh now took the mantle as well, DC lost three more wickets to slip to 192/9, with 18 runs required off 9 balls. Ashutosh whacked a six and a four on the last two balls of the penultimate over.
DC got a lucky break when Rishabh Pant missed the stumping off Mohit Sharma on the first ball of the 20th over bowled by left-arm spinner Shahbaz Ahmed.
With five needed off four balls and Ashutosh on strike, the right-hander thumped a full ball from Shahbaz down the ground for a six to seal a memorable chase. His blistering innings included five fours and five sixes.
Fans were left in awe of Ashutosh Sharma’s temperament and powerful finishing, plus the way he has built run-chases since last season.
