Argentina defeated Columbia in the final of Copa America 2024 1-0 and the fans are taking to social media to react to Lionel Messi’s side winning their third major trophy in three years.
The Argentina vs Columbia final started two hours after its scheduled kick-off time due to fan disturbance outside the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, Florida, the site of the final.
The two sides played a nervy first half and created a few chances along the way. In the second ha;f, both teams locked down on defence. Messi suffered a no-contact ankle injury in the 66th minute and had to be taken off the field. The 37-year-old was weeping after being taken off in what might be his final game in a major tournament for the national team.
The match went to extra-time, which was only introduced in this tournament for the final. In the 95th minute, Lautaro Martinez and Giovanni Lo Celso were brought onto the pitch and in the 113th they scored and assisted the first and only goal of the game.
The 1-0 win meant that Argentina had defended their Copa America title, after having won the previous edition of the tournament in 2021. This team had also come into this competition as the defending FIFA World Cup winners, making the win here their third major title in three years.

It now seems weird to recall the time before 2021, when Lionel Messi had not won a single major trophy with Argentina despite being arguably the greatest player of all time. He has now won three trophies (two Copa America and one FIFA World Cup) in the past three years.
After winning Copa America 2024, will Lionel Messi announce his retirement from international football soon, or does he wish to play in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will also be majorly played in the United States?
