Ex-United Player Backs Liverpool As Contenders: Former Manchester United star and legend Teddy Sheringham believes that Liverpool will be Premier League title contenders for the 2023/24 season despite new management. Not only that, but he also believes that new manager Arne Slot will do things his own way and will not emulate legendary manager Jurgen Klopp.
The Reds are in a conundrum they have not faced for some time. After nine successful seasons, which saw them win the Premier League for the first time in the modern era and the UEFA Champions League, club manager Klopp left his post.
The club needed someone to fill his massive shoes and chose Dutch manager Arne Slot for the job. Slot has previously only managed in the Eredivisie. First became a head coach at AZ and then moved to Feyenoord, where he won the league and the domestic cup in four seasons.
Now at Liverpool, the 45-year-old needs to keep the club in title contentions. After being one of the top two teams in England for years alongside Manchester City, the Merseyside club seemed to have been pipped by Arsenal as the second-best team in the country and seems to have fallen to third, where they finished in the Premier League last season.

Teddy Sheringham, who has played for countless British clubs but is most known for his time at Tottenham and Manchester United in the 1990s and the 2000s, is now a pundit at Sky Sports. When questioned about who he sees as favourites to win the league this season, he did not name any of his former clubs, but named Manchester City, Arsenal, and Liverpool.
“I think there’s three teams capable of winning the title this year. Man City, Arsenal, and, while I was unsure about them, with the new manager coming in, I think Liverpool will be up there,” Teddy said.
The former England international then went on to show his faith in Slot, believing that the new manager would not try to do things the way that Klopp did but would acknowledge the former manager’s achievement, saying,
“There was purpose in Jurgen’s ways; Liverpool fans loved him, and Slot obviously isn’t stupid enough to come in and try and do things his way and change things up. His approach and his acknowledgement of Klopp is the perfect way to keep his players and the supporters on side. They’re definitely in the title race.”
The Reds have gotten off to a fantastic start to the 2024/25 Premier League season. They opened their season with 2-0 wins over Ipswich Town and Brentford in consecutive weeks before thrashing rivals Man United 3-0 in their most recent game.
