England vs West Indies 2024 T20 WC Match Report
The West Indies got off to a flying start, scoring 36 runs in the first four overs, mostly at the hands of Brandon King, who, apart from taking the slogging duties, hit a massive 101-metre six in the third over off Reece Topley.
But in the fifth over, playing at 23-off-12, King hit the ball towards covers and then fell down in his crease. The Jamaican suffered a side-strain injury and was out for the rest of the match as he was announced to be retired hurt.
With no wickets having fallen, Nicholas Pooran walked in. The two batters kept up the pace till around the eighth over, after which boundaries dried up. So even when he hit occasional fours and sixes, Johnson Charles scored 38-off-34 balls, getting dismissed in the 12th over.

The West Indies captain, Rovman Powell, then came to bat and tried to pick up the pace. Especially in the 15th over bowled by Liam Livingstone, he hit three 6s before being out on the last ball of the over after having scored 36 runs in 16 balls.
Nicholas Pooran departed soon afterwards, having played an uncharacteristically slow inning of 36 in 32.
At 141/3 in 16 overs, the team looked to increase their run rate, but Andre Russell lost his wicket too after scoring just a run. But in the last three overs, Sherfane Rutherford took charge of scoring and took the Windies to a par total of 180 at the end of their 20 overs as he scored 28-off-15.
The England batting was far less complex, as Phil Salt took charge of keeping up with the required run rate from the start. So while captain Jos Buttler scored 25-off-22 before getting out in the eighth over, Salt was hovering around the 200 strike rate mark.
Phil Salt, who was dropped by wicketkeeper Pooran in the third over, punished the West Indies for that mistake and anchored the England inning at a rapid pace.
Moeen Ali came and went soon after Buttler’s wicket, but England’s deep batting order meant that the 97 runs required off the last 10 overs would not be out of their reach. And it wasn’t as in came Jonny Bairstow, who joined in the mayhem as he and Salt started wreaking havoc.
England did not require 20 overs to score 181 runs; they did so in the 18th over itself, as the defending champions won the match by eight wickets and 15 balls to spare.
While Bairstow played an awesome inning of 48-off-26, it was Phil Salt who was named the Player of the Match for his 87 runs off 47 deliveries.
Having won their Super 8 game, England is in the driving seat in Group 2 of the Super 8, followed by South Africa, who won their first game at this stage against the United States.
