England Test squad vs Pakistan: On Tuesday, September 10, the ECB named a 17-man squad to tour Pakistan next month. Captain Ben Stokes and opener Zak Crawley have been named and will mark their return to the Test side after missing the recently concluded Test series against Sri Lanka at home due to injuries. Stokes is recovering from a hamstring injury and Crawley from a finger injury.
England will tour Pakistan for three Test matches, starting October 7. At the moment, the Tests are scheduled to be played in Multan, Karachi, and Rawalpindi, though news has emerged that the Test series could be shifted as the venues are under construction and redevelopment for the Champions Trophy 2025.
However, fast bowler Mark Wood is out for the rest of the year after an elbow injury.
Pacer Brydon Carse, whose ban for betting irregularities was completed a few weeks ago, has been given a call-up and could make his Test debut in Pakistan. 20-year-old left-arm pacer Josh Hull, who made his Test debut in the third Test against Sri Lanka and picked up three wickets, will be on his first Test tour.
Gus Atkinson, Olly Stone, Chris Woakes, and Matthew Potts are other pacers in the squad. This will be Woakes’ first away Test tour since March 2022. In the absence of the retired pair of James Anderson and Stuart Broad, the injured Wood, and the dropped Ollie Robinson, England have put their faith once again in Woakes for an away tour despite his poor numbers outside England.
In the spin department, left-arm spinner Jack Leach, who was not picked for the home summer, returns to the squad to join Shoaib Bashir and leg-spinner Rehan Ahmed. England have not picked left-arm spinner Tom Hartley, who took a match-winning seven-wicket haul in Hyderabad earlier this year.
With Crawley returning, Dan Lawrence, who scored 120 runs in six innings against Sri Lanka, is dropped, while the uncapped Jordan Cox is retained.
England defeated Pakistan 3-0 on their previous tour in 2022.
