England players who have pulled out of IPL: Indian fans are really upset with the England players and ECB because as many as five England stars have pulled out of the IPL 2024 for various reasons without even arriving in India for the tournament.
The latest on this list is pace-bowling all-rounder David Willey, who has pulled out due to personal reasons. Willey was bought by the Lucknow Super Giants in the IPL 2024 auction for INR 2 crore.
He initially withdrew from the start of the tournament; LSG coach Justin Langer said the English pacer has been on the road for two months playing in the ILT20 and PSL and hence needed rest. But on Saturday, ahead of LSG’s second match of the season, it was announced that Willey has withdrawn from the entire season and that he’s been replaced by New Zealand seamer Matt Henry.
Kolkata Knight Riders’ Jason Roy pulled out of the tournament, citing personal reasons. He was replaced by England teammate Phil Salt. Roy was with KKR last season and was retained, but decided to opt out of the tournament this year. This is, interestingly, the third time that Roy has pulled out of the IPL for reasons other than injury: he had withdrawn in 2020 (Delhi Capitals) and in 2022 (Gujarat Titans), both times for personal reasons, like this year.
Harry Brook, who was signed by the Delhi Capitals for INR 4 crore, has pulled out of IPL 2024 after the passing away of his grandmother. Brook had also missed the entire 5-Test series in India when his grandmother was ill, and then he decided to remain with his family in their tough period.
Fast bowlers Mark Wood and Gut Atkinson were pulled out of the IPL by the ECB. Both players were part of the Test series in India, though Atkinson warmed the bench throughout, and are likely to be part of the England squad for the T20 World Cup in June. Hence, the ECB have withdrawn them from the IPL to keep them fresh and fit for the T20 World Cup.
