Djokovic beat Alcaraz in Cincinnati Masters final: Tennis star Novak Djokovic defeated World no.1 Carlos Alcaraz in the final of the Cincinnati Masters 2023. As this was the first meeting between the two since the Wimbledon final earlier this year which was won by Alcaraz, many are seeing it as the 23-time Grand Slam winner taking his win back. This could also be surmised from Djokovic’s reaction, who tore off his shirt in a manner similar to WWE Hall of Famer Hulk Hogan.

Djokovic gets Wimbledon finals revenge on Alcaraz
After conquering the Australian Open by winning it ten times, Djokovic became the new king of Wimbledon’s grass court. After Roger Federer’s last win in 2017, the Djoker won the last four consecutive Wimbledon finals (the 2020 event was canceled).
So when he lost the 2023 final to Carlos Alcaraz, it looked like a ‘passing of the torch moment’. While it wasn’t the Serb’s first Wimbledon final loss, it was his first since he became one of the all-time greats. A grueling five-set match saw the 20-year-old eke out a historic win against the veteran.
But this win at the Cincinnati Masters final shows that the King of Tennis isn’t ready just yet to surrender his crown to an up-an-comer.

Djokovic beat Alcaraz in Cincinnati Masters final: The shirt saga
Experts praised Novak Djokovic’s ‘game-mind’ in his win over Carlos Alcaraz. The 36-year-old struggled in the first set. In the post-match interview, he hinted that it was the sun’s heat that troubled him at the start of the match. But as the sun went down and the conditions were muted, Djokovic took some breaks and even asked the umpire to change his shirt, which the official agreed to.
“The umpire said ‘okay’. We can talk all night whether or not that was the right call, but like we can’t be mad at Novak for asking the question. It’s the umpire’s job to enforce the rules. So he shouldn’t take the direct criticism from that and I hope he doesn’t,” said former American Tennis player Andy Roddick.
After winning the match, Djokovic tore off his shirt in celebration, thus showing how cathartic the win was for the former World No.1.

The journey back to being the No.1 in the World
Despite defeating the World no.1 Carlos Alcaraz, Novak Djokovic is still no.2 in the rankings. For him to regain the top spot, he will have to win the upcoming US Open.
It was winning last year’s US Open that made Alcaraz a global star. He will be looking to retain his title by winning the Championship, keeping his no.1 spot in the process.
It seems that a new rivalry between Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz is heating up. While it is one of Novak’s countless rivalries across his career, it will be Alcaraz’s first major one, the outcome of which might shape the rest of his career.
