Dinesh Karthik On Jasprit Bumrah As Captain: Former Indian wicketkeeper Dinesh Karthik does not believe in the idea of Jasprit Bumrah becoming the next Indian Cricket Team captain and suggests that the pacer should be protected instead.
The 30-year-old fast bowler might be the best bowler in the world today. Having been India’s No. 1 pacer for years despite injury struggles, Bumrah has hit his stride and is in the best form he has ever been in the past year.
The Mumbai Indians star, after over a year on the shelf due to injury troubles, returned to the national team right before the 2023 ODI World Cup, where he was in excellent form. Then, in IPL 2024, he took 20 wickets in 13 games for an otherwise dismal MI side with an economy of 6.48, a season where scores over 200 became the norm.
Then came the 2024 T20 World Cup in the USA and the West Indies, where Bumrah went through a purple match. In multiple big matches, it seemed like he could take a wicket on every delivery. In eight games, he took 15 wickets with a super-low economy of 4.17. Not only was he the Player of the Match in a low-scoring game against Pakistan, but he also played a major role in India winning the final against South Africa from a losing position.
Dinesh Karthik, who retired from all cricket earlier this year after a playoff run with the Royal Challengers Bengaluru in IPL 2024, has now been named the RCB batting coach for next season.
Dinesh Karthik On Jasprit Bumrah As Captain
In a recent video on Cricbuzz, DK said that he does not want Jasprit Bumrah to become the next Indian captain, seeing how injury-prone he is, and that the team should rather focus on keeping him healthy for big tournaments.
“For a fast bowler like Bumrah, his fitness needs to be monitored, and he needs to be protected as a player and only made to play in important matches. I keep saying this about Bumrah; he is like a Kohinoor diamond; we got to protect him, take care of him, and make sure that he lasts as long as possible because whenever Bumrah plays in any format, he makes an impact, and that’s what we want,” said Karthik.
The former India wicketkeeper went on to clarify that his thoughts about him not being a captain have nothing to do with his maturity or leadership abilities, but purely his physical health. He said,
“Everything right… He is calm, cool, good maturity, but he is a fast bowler, so how can we play him for all three formats? That is the biggest question the selectors would have had.”
After Virat Kohli, Ravindra Jadeja, and captain Rohit Sharma’s retirement from T20Is after winning the 2024 World Cup, Suryakumar Yadav was named the India captain in the format, while Rohit remains the skipper in ODIs and Tests.
