Dinesh Karthik Breaks Unwanted IPL Record: Royal Challengers Bengaluru wicketkeeper Dinesh Karthik now holds an unwanted record in the IPL of scoring the most ducks in league history.
RCB took on the Delhi Capitals in Match 62 of IPL 2024 in Bengaluru’s Chinnaswamy Stadium. The away team won the toss and decided to field first. RCB got off to a decent start but lost Virat Kohli and captain Faf du Plessis in the powerplay overs.
Rajat Patidar and Will Jacks then stabilized the inning, scoring 41 and 52 runs, respectively. By the time Patidar was dismissed, the Royal Challengers were 124/3 in the 13th over and well on their way to a 200+ run score.
But from that point on, their batting order collapsed. In the final four overs, RCB scored just 20-odd runs and lost five wickets. One of these wickets was of the explosive lower-order batter Dinesh Karthik, who was dismissed by Khallel Ahmad on just the second ball he played for zero runs.
RCB only managed to score 187 runs, with Swapnil Singh and Mohammad Siraj also being out for a duck. But it was Karthik’s duck that was quite newsworthy.
Dinesh Karthik Breaks Unwanted IPL Record
When the veteran wicketkeeper was dismissed for nil against the Delhi Capitals, it was the 18th time in his IPL career that he was out for a duck, which is a league record.
Before this match, he had 17 ducks to his name, which was the joint-most in IPL history with Rohit Sharma and Glenn Maxwell. But with his duck against DC last night, Karthik overtook Sharma and Maxwell for the most dismissals on zero in the IPL. Piyush Chawla is fourth on that list with 16 ducks.
Dinesh Karthik’s duck did not impact the match too much, as RCB bowled DC out for 140, winning the match by 47 runs.
With that win, Royal Challengers Bengaluru have now won five matches on the trot. This came after they won only one out of eight of their matches at the start of the season. With 12 points in 13 games, RCB has an outside chance of making it to the playoffs.
In their final league game in IPL 2024, RCB will take on the Chennai Super Kings in a must-win game on May 18 at the Chinnaswamy.
