David Warner Confirms International Retirement: The third T20I against West Indies on Tuesday in Perth was the last international match on home soil for David Warner, the opener confirmed after bagging the Man of the Series award.
Even though Warner’s 49-ball 81 went in vain as West Indies registered a 37-run victory after posting 220, Australia sealed another home series win, having won the first two T20Is. Warner, who had scored 70 runs in the first T20I in what was his 100th T20I, was handed the Man of the Series award.
The opener had last year confirmed his retirement plans. He said he hoped for a farewell from Test cricket at his home ground in Sydney, which he got last month, and that he is targeting the T20 World Cup in June this year as his swansong from international cricket.
Australia’s only T20I series between now and the T20 World Cup in the USA and West Indies is later this month in New Zealand, with the IPL 2024 in between.
‘Well and truly done‘: David Warner Confirms International Retirement
The 37-year-old reckons soon it will be time for the youngsters to take over.
Speaking with the broadcasters after the series win in Perth, David Warner said:
“Well and truly done. It’s time for the youngsters to come through and showcase their talent. We’ve got extreme talent here. We’re in good stead for the future.”
At the time of his Test retirement, Warner also confirmed his ODI retirement, with the World Cup 2023 final being his last ODI, although he mentioned that wouldn’t mind playing in the Champions Trophy 2025 only if Australia “needed him”.
Warner was the Man of the Tournament in the 2020 T20 World Cup in the UAE, where Australia won their maiden men’s T20 world title.
Obviously been an amazing career for David Warner: Mitchell Marsh
Mitchell Marsh, Australia’s new T20I captain, hailed Warner’s contributions to international cricket.
“It’s obviously been an amazing career for him,” Mitchell said. “I guess it’s kind of fitting for him to finish the way it has [with that innings]. What a servant to Australian cricket.”
In 102 T20Is, Warner has scored 3067 runs—only 53 runs behind Australia’s leading men’s T20I run-scorer, Aaron Finch—at an average of 33 with one century and 26 fifties.
Warner, though, will continue to ply his trade in franchise cricket around the world.
