Danielle McGahey 1st Transgender in Int Cricket: The 29-year-old Australian-born, Danielle McGahey is of full joy right now. Her long-awaited dream, to become a professional athlete at the international level, finally got wings. And for her, it is bigger than just personal as it would inspire thousands of transgenders to dream bigger and reach their goals.
The batter has been selected for Canada’s upcoming Women’s T20 Americas Qualifier for the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024. She moved from Australia to Canada in 2020.
She transitioned from male to female, socially in 2020, followed by medical transition in 2021.

Danielle McGahey 1st Transgender in Int Cricket
The International Cricket Council (ICC) has confirmed that McGahey meets the eligibility criteria for male-to-female (MTF) transition to participate in international women’s cricket.
“We can confirm that Danielle went through the process as required under the ICC’s Player Eligibility Regulations, and as a result has been deemed eligible to participate in international women’s cricket on the basis that she satisfies the MTF transgender eligibility criteria,” said an ICC official.
Danielle McGahey 1st Transgender in Int Cricket, expressed her honor to represent her community as a transgender athlete on the international stage. She talked to BBC Sport and said, “To be able to represent my community is something I never dreamed I would be able to do.”
She previously played for Canada in the South American Women’s Championship in October 2021, although that tournament lacked international status.

Qualifiers to Take Place From September 4
The Women’s T20 Americas Qualifier will take place in Los Angeles, USA, from September 4 to 11, featuring Argentina, Brazil, Canada, and the USA. The winner will advance to the global Qualifiers, where teams from other regional Qualifiers will compete for T20 World Cup spots in Bangladesh.
What Are the Regulations of ICC for Transgender Players?
The ICC updated its Player Eligibility regulations in 2021, with criteria based on gender recognition. For a male transitioning to female, testosterone levels are a key measure and must be continuously below 5 nmol/l for at least 12 months.
The ICC is conducting a detailed review of its guidelines, led by its medical advisory committee, which may result in changes to its regulations.
For now, Danielle McGahey is on the verge of making cricket history.
