Cummins talks about the return from Injury: Australian captain Pat Cummins aims the upcoming series against India to script his return from the wrist injury. The news has spread relief in Australian camps as the Kangaroos are looking to get a hold of their sixth ICC World Cup. Up until now, Australia has been the only team to announce a preliminary squad for the World Cup.
Cummins Talks About the Return from Injury
Cummins’s wrist injury came up in the last match of the Ashes 2023, and initially, it was told that he would have to sit on the sidelines for 6 weeks until their World Cup match against India on October 8.
Cummins was ruled out of the South Africa Series due to the injury. Though he would be traveling with the squad, he is not included in the T20I and ODI squads. But in his interview that came out with a flair of hope, he assured that he is doing everything in his control to return for the upcoming series against India.
“I’ll head over to South Africa at the back-end of that leg. But we’re probably looking more at those one-dayers ahead of the World Cup. It shouldn’t be too bad. Another few weeks and it’ll be right.”
“It hurt day one when I did it, and it hurt a lot when I was batting, but I didn’t think it was too bad,” Cummins said, referring to the injury. “Then with each day it got a little bit sorer so I knew it was probably bone as opposed to a muscle.”

The Captaincy Conundrum
As Cummins decided to concentrate solely on Test cricket after the World Cup, there has been a discussion in Australian Cricket about who would be leading the side in T20Is and ODIs. For the South African Series, Mitchel Marsh is appointed as the T20I captain. He might be one of the favorites to captain in ODIs as well in the absence of Cummins. When the questions were raised regarding this, Cummins said that the focus is solely on the World Cup and the rest of the things would be discussed after.
“I haven’t thought about it too much to be honest. We will play this World Cup and then assess it after that. The good thing is we’ve got a few options. (Marsh) is probably the most obvious one if he’s doing the T20s as well.”

As Cummins talks about the return from Injury, the question was also raised about the current captain Mitchel Marsh. When asked about Marsh, Cummins was full of words. Marsh came back spectacularly, scoring a century in the comeback Test earlier. “He’s always been a huge member of the team, a real leader. As a captain, that’s what you want—a guy that’s going out there, taking the game on, someone we can all get behind. Off the field, he’s just a great people-person. His energy’s infectious; he’s great to hang around with, always good fun.”
