Pat Cummins won the toss and elected to bowl first with heavy dew in the second innings in mind. While dew was indeed significant in this match, the pitch kept getting slower and slower during SRH’s innings, making boundary-hitting an arduous task after the powerplay.
CSK lost opener Ajinkya Rahane in the 3rd over to Bhuvneshwar, but Gaikwad and Daryl Mitchell laid the platform with their partnership of 107 (64) with Mitchell raising his maiden IPL fifty.
After ending the powerplay at 50/1, both batters hit Cummins for a six each and got regular fours. Gaikwad got to his fifty in 27 balls and continued steadily toward a consecutive century with sixes against Bhuvneshwar and Unadkat. However, while Mitchell got going with a 29-ball fifty, the CSK captain slowed down and failed to have proper timing in his 80s and 90s.
Eventually, he got out on 98 in the last over of the innings. Before that, though, Shivam Dube provided the impetus to CSK by blasting four sixes and a four in his 39* (20). The crowd favorite, MS Dhoni, got to bat in the last over and flicked his first ball for four, aided by some misfield at deep square leg. CSK finished at 212.

A similar target was chased down by LSG a few nights ago, but it needed a special innings from Marcus Stoinis. Tonight, nobody played that kind of knock for SRH.
Although Head and Abhishek smoked a four and a six each, both were dismissed by Deshpande in the same fashion: slicing a delivery outside the off-stump to deep point. In between these two dismissals, Deshpande also got Anmolpreet Singh for a golden duck through a leading edge.
After the powerplay, CSK dried up the boundaries, further piling up pressure on SRH batters. CSK needed two more important strikes, of Markram and Klaasen, to pocket the match, and they came via Matheesha Pathirana. The slingy-actioned Pathirana uprooted Markram’s middle-stump and had Klaasen slogging at long-on.
SRH were in tatters, and their misery was ended at the score of 134, with Deshpande taking four. Mustafizur, Shardul, and Jadeja all chipped in.
Score summary: Chennai Super Kings 212/3 in 20 overs (Ruturaj Gaikwad 98, Bhuvneshwar Kumar 1/38); Sunrisers Hyderabad 134/10 in 18.5 overs (Aiden Markram 32, Tushar Deshpande 4/27). CSK defeated SRH by 78 runs.
