CR7 Comments On The New Portugal Playing Style: Legendary footballer Cristiano Ronaldo reckons that the change in tactics and play style in the Portugal national team following the disappointing Euros 2024 campaign has provided him with more freedom onto the pitch.
This comment came after Ronaldo scored a goal in the winning cause against Croatia in a UEFA Nations League game. In the game, Diego Dalot opened the scoring for the Portuguese in the seventh minute. Then, in the 34th minute, Ronaldo received a pass from Bruno Fernandes Nuno Mendes and slotted the ball to the net. Ronaldo and Co. ended up winning the match 2-1 after Dalot scored an own goal in the 41st minute.
The five-time Ballon d’Or winner, who is being managed by Roberto Martinez in international football, also represented the team in the 2024 UEFA Euros. Despite topping their group, Portugal lost a game to Georgia. Then, in the round of 16, the match had to go to penalties for them to win. Then in the quarterfinals, the Portuguese took on France and were eliminated, not even reaching the semi-finals despite being one of the favourites.
CR7 Comments On The New Portugal Playing Style
After the recent win against Croatia, Ronaldo spoke to the reporters about how different the playing style of the national team is as compared to the Euros. He said,
“I felt freer than usual in this game. The coach also gave me that opportunity, and we also played, in my opinion, a little differently to what we played in the European Championship. We made a lot of changes; the players were freer on the pitch, and when that happens, it’s better for me, I’ll be honest. I feel better; I feel more involved in the game, and I can enjoy football more.”
He went on to elaborate upon how he likes the freedom on the pitch, which allows him to create space for his teammates as well.
“It’s not that I didn’t enjoy it in the European Championship, but I like being a free player; I like to make space for my teammates too, and today was a performance that the team performed very well. It’s no coincidence, for example, that Diogo Dalot scored; he’s a defender, but he appeared up front. That says a lot about the mobility the team had on the pitch today, and I’m happy about that, not only because the team played an excellent game but also because they scored the 900th goal,” Cristiano continued.
This game was also a historic one for Cristiano Ronaldo. The Real Madrid legend scored his 900th career goal in this game. This includes 450 goals for Los Blancos, 131 goals for his national team, 145 for Manchester United, 101 for Juventus, 68 for his current club Al-Nassr, and five for Sporting Lisbon.
Currently playing for Al-Nassr in the Saudi Pro League, Cristiano Ronaldo moved to Saudi Arabia at the age of 37. Now 39 years old, the move to SPL was certainly a good one for him in terms of his goal count. In less than two full seasons here, he has scored 68 goals. In his only full season with the club, he scored 44 goals in 45 games across all competitions.
