Could CSK Make MS Dhoni No 1 Retention: Former India and Chennai Super Kings captain MS Dhoni has been in talks with his IPL franchise CSK in order to get retained ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction. Amid all the speculation, a few reports have emerged that the franchise might even retain the legendary wicketkeeper as their No. 1 retention.
The rules for retention for IPL 2025 state that each team can retain up to six players, five of whom can be capped. The top retained player will be worth at least Rs. 18 crore, the second 14, while the third retention will be worth 11 crore. The fourth retained player will go up to Rs. 18 crore, while the fifth will be worth 14 crore.
Any uncapped player can be retained in Rs. 4 crore. The rules also allow for any former international player who has not represented their national team for five years to be classed as an uncapped player. Called by many the ‘MS Dhoni rule’ because of how it allows CSK to retain him for just 4 crore.
Earlier, it was speculated that the franchise’s new captain, Ruturaj Gaikwad, would be the team’s first retention. However, reports now suggest that the team’s veteran all-rounder, Ravindra Jadeja, would get the nod.
Could CSK Make MS Dhoni No 1 Retention
There are also some reports that suggest that MS Dhoni might be made the No. 1 retention but would not be paid Rs. 18 crore. If a team uses all five of their capped retention and spends Rs. 75 crore in doing so, it then does not matter which player gets how much. Hypothetically, if a team retains five players, one player can (but will never) get Rs. 71 crore, while the other four can get Rs. 1 crore each.
In a similar scenario, but not nearly as unrealistic, MS Dhoni can be made Chennai Super Kings’ No. 1 pick but be paid significantly less than 18 crore.
Speaking about seeing the World Cup-winning captain play for one of the last times ever, CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan told this to Cricbuzz,
“When he is ready, what else do we want?” We are happy.”
Even Dhoni himself discussed how he is in the final years of his career and how he just wants to enjoy them, saying,
“I just want to enjoy whatever last few years of cricket I am able to play. When you play cricket like a professional sport, it becomes difficult to enjoy it just like a game. That’s what I want to do. It’s not easy. The emotions keep coming; the commitments are there. I want to enjoy the game for the next few years. I have to keep myself fit for nine months so that I can play two and a half months of IPL. You need to plan it out, but at the same time chill a bit.”
The last day to submit their retention list for IPL teams is October 31. While the mega auction will take place on November 24-25.
