Defending champion Carlos Alcaraz has defeated 24-time Grand Slam winner Novak Djokovic in the final of the men’s tournament at Wimbledon 2024.
Alcaraz, who is just 21 years old, has not only won his fourth Grand Slam title, but he has also defended his crown at Wimbledon, having defeated Djokovic in last year’s final as well. This win made him only the fourth player to have won four Grand Slams at the age of 21.
Already a great of the game, many are now pegging the Spaniard to be in the race of the greatest of all time when it will all be said and done.
But coming back to the present, Alcaraz, who is currently ranked third in the world, kicked off his Wimbledon Open journey with two wins over unseeded players, Mark Lajal and Aleksandar Vikic, in straight sets. He then faced his first opponent,, who was seeded, taking on and defeating American Frances Tiafoe in a tough five-set battle.
In the Round of 16, he beat 16th-seeded Frenchman Ugo Humbert in four sets before beating 12th-seeded American Tommy Paul in four sets as well.
In the semi-final, Carlos met his first former Grand Slam winner, the fifth-seeded Russian Daniil Medvedev. After losing the first set in this match in the tiebreaker, Alcaraz came back in style and took three consecutive sets to take the game in four and make it to his second Wimbledon final in a row.
This was also Carlos Alcaraz’s second consecutive Grand Slam final, as the young ace reached the final of and won the French Open earlier this year.

Anyway, we come back to the Wimbledon final. And right at the start, it starts going wrong for the Djoker, who gets his service broken in the first game of the first set. Alcaraz quickly notches up a 1-3 lead in the set before breaking another serve. The set was short to last then, with the score being 2-6 in favour of the defending champion.
But Djokovic’s fans were not too worried. Even though it was a Grand Slam final, the 37-year-old has been known for incredible come-from-behind wins on the biggest stage.
The worries for the Serbian legend started when his first service game in the second set was also broken. The second set followed a similar script to the first, with Alcaraz breaking two games and winning 2-6.
With the championship on the line, Djokovic finally opened the third set by winning a game. From here, this set went as it should between two top players, with both of them winning their serves but being unable to break serves.
The match went past the two-hour mark, as both players had won four games each. But from here, the Spaniard showed his class, won some exquisite points, and broke Djokovic’s serve. But Novak returned the favour and broke his first serve of the match.
The two world-class athletes then won one game each, and we went into the tiebreaker. From this point, the match could finish within 10 minutes or could last for two more hours.
But the player who had been dominating the whole match could not give up at this point, as Carlos Alcaraz broke several serves, won the set in a tiebreaker with the score 7-4, and won his second Wimbledon 2024 Gentlemen’s Singles title.
As for Novak Djokovic, he will have to wait till late August, when the US Open will start, to win his 25th Grand Slam Open.
