India fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah is one of the few players who have played under MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli, and Rohit Sharma as captains in the national side for an extended period of time. Hence, the speedster stands in a good position to comment and compare their leadership qualities.
Bumrah made his ODI and T20I debuts in 2016 under Dhoni. He then grew in stature under Kohli, which included helping India win two Test series in Australia. Under Rohit, Bumrah became the best fast bowler in the world across formats, which included sensational performances in the World Cup 2023 and T20 World Cup 2024, where he was the Man of the Tournament.
Speaking with The Indian Express, Jasprit Bumrah highlights the differences in captaincy and leadership styles of three of India’s greatest and most successful captains.
Rohit Has Empathy Towards Bowlers: Bumrah Analyzes Players Who Captained Him
Firstly, Bumrah praised Rohit for having empathy towards his bowlers, a quality that not many captains have.
“Rohit is one of the few captains who has empathy towards bowlers, despite being a batter. Rohit is not rigid; he is open to feedback.”
Bumrah then reiterated Dhoni’s much-lauded quality of providing his players with assurance and security about their place in the team. He also reflected on Dhoni’s clear and simple planning.
“MS gave me a lot of security quickly. He has a lot of faith in his instinct and doesn’t believe in over-planning.”
The 30-year-old pacer touched on Kohli’s energetic style of leadership. Bumrah said Kohli remains a leader in the team despite not being the captain anymore.
“Virat is energy-driven, passionate, and wears his heart on his sleeve. Now Virat is not the captain, but he is still a leader. Captaincy is a post, but a team is run by 11 people.”
After propelling India to the T20 World Cup 2024 trophy, Bumrah has been on an extended break. He was rested from the Sri Lanka tour and the upcoming Duleep Trophy. He could make his comeback with next month’s test series against Bangladesh or the following Test series against New Zealand.
