British Gov Calls on India over Bashir Visa Issue: What Really Happened?
England player Shoaib Bashir was denied the visa by the Indian government due to his Pakistani ancestry. The player had to return home to solve the issue and will miss the first Test match against India, which starts on January 25.
“The specifics of this case are a matter for Shoaib Bashir and the Indian Government. But we absolutely expect India to treat British citizens fairly at all times in its visa process. We have previously raised the issues British citizens with Pakistani heritage experience applying for visas with the Indian High Commission in London.,” a British government spokesperson said.
Not the First Time
It’s not the first time that an English player who has Pakistani ancestry has faced a similar situation. Moeen Ali had to arrive late for the IPL 2022 due to his visa complications. Another case was Saqib Mahmood being ruled out of the entire series when the England Lions visited India in 2019.
The ECB had raised the concerns many times before and had gotten assurance from BCCI and the India High Commission to solve the issue, but no action has been taken on that to date.
