Boxer Nishant Dev Reflects on Paris Olympic Loss: Indian boxer Nishant Dev reflects on missing out on a medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics and promises to return to come back stronger and more determined than before.
The 23-year-old participated in the men’s 71 kg boxing event at the 2024 Olympics. In the first round, he defeated a tenacious rival, Jose Rodriguez Tenorio from Ecuador, 3-2 via split decision.
In the quarterfinal, Dev took on Marco Verde of Mexico, who is a professional boxer but came down to the amateur ranks to bring a medal to his country. The first round of the match was won by the Indian as the judges were split. While the second and third rounds were won by the Mexican, the third being a unanimous win. This meant that Verde won the contest 4-1 via split decision.
While there was some controversy around the decision, especially the split nature of the first round, the result wasn’t anything outside the parameters of the sport.
If Nisant had won that match, he would have become only the second Indian male boxer to win a medal at the Olympics, the first being Vijender Singh, who won a bronze at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

In a recent update on social media, Nishant Dev has reflected on his first Olympics experience. The young boxer claims that he was disheartened by the loss but has now overcome that feeling and that he will come back from this disappointment even stronger.
“In the days that followed, I have had time to reflect and find peace within myself. The disappointment was overwhelming, but the love and support I received have been equally powerful. To my family, friends, coaches, and well-wishers – thank you. Your belief in me has been a guiding light through these moments and promise to honor your support by continuing to fight for my dreams, stronger and more determined than ever before,” he wrote in an Instagram post.
As for other Indian boxers at the 2024 Paris Olympics, Nikhat Zareen and Preeti Pawar would crash out in the round of 16, and so did Amit Pnghal. Jasmine Lamboria was defeated in the round of 32. While Tokyo 2020 bronze medallist Lovlina Borgohain was defeated in the quarterfinal. This meant that the Indian boxing contingent failed to produce any medals at the games.
