Best steals in IPL 2024 auction: A total of 72 players were sold in the IPL 2024 auction on Tuesday in the Coca-Cola Arena in Dubai. This was the first time an IPL auction took place outside India, and it was also the first time the BCCI allowed dozens of spectators inside the arena to watch the auction as it unfolded.
It all made for an entertaining auction, as huge rounds of applause went around when the most expensive player record was broken twice. After Sunrisers Hyderabad bought Pat Cummins for INR 20.5 crore, his teammate Mitchell Starc was sold for INR 24.75 crore by the Kolkata Knight Riders.
There were a few low-price picks as well, which could be called the steals of the auction.
3 best steals in IPL 2024 auction:
Wanindu Hasaranga
While SRH’s huge bid of 20.5 crore for Cummins may be called a poor decision, SRH were smart, and a bit lucky, in roping in Wanindu Hasaranga for his base price of only 1.5 crore. Hasaranga was among the earliest players in the first set to be sold in the auction. And SRH getting him for his base price stunned the fans, who wondered why the other teams let Hasaranga go for such a low price.
Wanindu Hasaranga is Sri Lanka’s best T20 player and had earlier been at the top of the ICC T20I bowling rankings. In the Lankan Premier League 2023, Hasaranga was both the leading run-getter and the top wicket-taker. In IPL 2022, he was in the Purple Cap race with 26 wickets. His 2023 has been marred with a couple of injuries, but Hasaranga remains one of the best T20 spinners in the world.
Gerald Coetzee
South Africa’s Gerald Coetzee is one of the most exciting fast-bowling talents in the world currently. While the likes of Alzarri Joseph and Cummins went for a huge amount, Mumbai Indians made a steal of Coetzee with only INR 5 crore.
The 23-year-old Coetzee was arguably South Africa’s best bowler in the World Cup, snapping 20 wickets in 8 games at an average of 19.8. Coetzee is a proper wicket-taking option in the middle overs of a game; he can also hit long sixes and would be a perfect number 8 for MI.

Rachin Ravindra
Perhaps the best steal of the IPL 2024 auction was made by the Chennai Super Kings, as they gained the services of Rachin Ravindra for only INR 1.8 crore.
Before the auction, fans had been expecting Rachin to fetch at least 7-8 crore because of his excellent form in the World Cup, his all-round abilities, and his young age. However, CSK bagging the Kiwi player for merely INR 1.8 crore was shocking.
Rachin was the fourth-highest run scorer in the 2023 World Cup. The young left-hander showed flexibility to bat as an opener and in the middle order and scored 578 runs in 10 innings at a strike rate of 106 with the help of 3 centuries and 2 fifties.
