Bengaluru Police Files FIR Against RCB: A first information report (FIR) has been filed against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), their event partners DNA Entertainment, and the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) by the Bengaluru Police following the death of 11 people and injuries to several others during RCB’s trophy celebration parade.
RCB won their maiden IPL title this year in their 18th attempt. With RCB boasting perhaps the biggest fanbase of all franchises, the celebrations were animated and wild by the fans.
However, the trophy celebrations for the franchise and players have been marred by the unexpected stampede, which caused deaths and injuries to their fans, on June 4 in Bengaluru.
It has now been confirmed by the Bengaluru Police that there was no “official permission” given to RCB to hold the roadshow on June 4, and despite that, they continued with the parade, where the police couldn’t manage the vast number of fans that had taken over the roads in Bengaluru.
According to a report in ESPNcricinfo, RCB was listed as the first accused in the FIR lodged by Girish AK, a police inspector from the Cubbon Park Division, along with the franchise’s event partners, DNA Entertainment, and the KSCA, who conducted the event at the Chinnaswamy Stadium.
RCB announced victory parade without official permission: Bengaluru Police Files FIR Against RCB
The FIR clearly said, “Permission for the event at the stadium was denied. Despite this, KSCA, RCB, and DNA went ahead with their plans and ignored the police’s instructions.”
“Without any official permission, on June 4, RCB announced their celebration and victory parade on their social media and website, inviting fans to join. Once this news spread on TV channels and social media, we (Police) informed our senior officers and requested security and necessary arrangements.
“On June 4, the RCB team arrived at Vidhan Soudha for the felicitation ceremony, which went smoothly despite a huge crowd. Around 5:30 pm, the victory parade began towards Chinnaswamy Stadium. Police provided security at the stadium, but KSCA, RCB, and DNA failed to plan how the crowd would be allowed in. The stadium holds only 30,000 to 35,000 people, but lakhs of fans had gathered outside. At 3:10 pm, the gates were opened, and chaos broke out. There was a stampede.
Further, in another shocking decision, the police report said that RCB’s social media handles announced free entry passes for fans at the stadium gates, which led to the fans rushing towards the venue, causing more chaos. The police added that RCB had not informed the police about the passes situation that “caused confusion among the lakhs of fans waiting outside, which led to overcrowding and the stampede. In total, 11 people died, 64 were injured (including police officers).”
The state government and RCB both have announced compensation for the families of the deceased, and the franchise has announced a relief fund for the injured.
Siddaramaiah, the Karnataka chief minister, then ordered that the representatives of all parties named in the FIR be arrested. He also levied suspensions on some of the premier policemen, including the Commissioner and the Inspector of the Cubbon Park police station.
