The England Test Cricket Team captain Ben Stokes has made himself available for The Hundred 2024 (men’s), the annual English tournament where each team gets to bat for 100 deliveries.
While Stokes has not retired from T20Is and intends to play for England in the format in the future, he did not participate in the recent 2024 T20 World Cup to focus on his health. The star all-rounder has not played in the last two seasons of The Hundred, playing only in the inaugural 2021 season.
Ben Stokes To Play In The Hundred 2024
In the first season of the newly formatted league, Stokes led the Northern Superchargers (not as captain) to a fifth-place finish. Since then, his major focus has been on the England National Cricket Team’s Test side, which he had captained to several series wins.
The 33-year-old has also been struggling with knee injuries since early 2023, which resulted in him missing a large part of the IPL, only coming back later in the year for the 2023 ODI World Cup. His knee problems continued after the World Cup, for which he got surgery in late 2023.
Ben Stokes has now announced that he will return to play for the Northern Superchargers, playing four league games for them and the playoffs should they succeed. But in the three-year history of this league, the Superchargers haven’t even made it to the playoffs as reported by ESPNCricinfo.
Having played under Faf du Plessis’s captaincy in 2021, Stokes will now play under the leadership of fellow team England player Harry Brook.
However, it is very unlikely that he will bowl any overs in this tournament, seeing how he is still recuperating from a knee injury.
The Men’s tournament of The Hundred 2024 will commence on Tuesday, July 23 as the Oval Invincibles will take on the Birmingham Phoenix at London’s Kennington Oval. As for the Northern Superchargers’ first game, that will happen on Friday, July 26 at the Leeds in Headingly.
