Ben Stokes to Become England ODI Captain: England’s managing director, Rob Key, has hinted that Test skipper Ben Stokes is one of the strong contenders to become the next ODI captain, if not the skipper of both white-ball formats, following the decision of Jos Buttler to step down from his post after England failed to reach the semi-finals of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.
England lost all three of their group games, to Australia, Afghanistan, and South Africa, in the Champions Trophy, suffering a group-stage exit. Last year, they were knocked out of the semi-finals of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup by India, and a year before, they failed to reach the semi-finals of the World Cup 2023.
Their white-ball game has been on a downswing since their ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022 triumph, with the team being a pale shadow of the world-beating side they were under Eoin Morgan.
Ben Stokes to Become England ODI Captain? Rob Kean Reveals
Stokes has not played ODI cricket since the 2023 World Cup due to injuries and workload management. He’s revitalized the Test side along with Brendon McCullum since both came together in 2022.

Now, McCullum is the all-format England coach, and Stokes is being considered for the ODI captaincy as well.
Rob Key said, “Ben Stokes is one of the best captains I’ve ever seen. So it would be stupid not to look at him. It’s just the knock-on effect of what that means. I think nothing’s off the table, really. You look at every single option, and you think, right, what is the best thing to do? How is that going to impact other things?
“He’s an unbelievably good tactician, which we’ve seen in Test cricket, but he’s a leader of men. He’s someone who gets the best out of people. He’s someone that, when the pressure is really on, he’s able to throw a blanket around the players and actually say, ‘No, no, this is the way forward. Keep going with it.’ They’re the qualities that you need in leadership. Ben’s, as we know, an outstanding player, an outstanding leader. It’s more about what that would then mean to him? What would that then mean to his workload?”
Harry Brook led England last year in Buttler’s absence in the home ODI series against Australia, but he’s inexperienced in ODI cricket and is unlikely to be given the captaincy burden while he’s only cementing himself in the ODI side.
