BCCI awarded INR 125 crore to Indian team: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has opened up its wallet and shelled out a huge amount of money, INR 125 crore, on the Indian team as a reward for winning the ICC T20 World Cup 2024.
The Rohit Sharma-led Team India defeated South Africa in the T20 World Cup 2024 final on June 29 in Barbados by seven runs. It was a tight game which the Indian pacers snatched out of the jaws of South Africa, who at one point needed 30 runs in 30 balls, a comfortable target to achieve in modern-day white-ball cricket.
However, Jasprit Bumrah, Hardik Pandya, and Arshdeep Singh bowled five excellent overs to defend the total by seven runs and seal the trophy. With this, India also ended their 11-year wait for an ICC silverware. Rohit became the third Indian captain, after Kapil Dev and MS Dhoni, to win a World Cup trophy.
Fans react after BCCI awarded INR 125 crore to Indian team:
In what is easily the biggest size of prize money distributed in the history of Indian sports, the BCCI has awarded the Indian team with a huge sum of INR 125 crore. The BCCI Secretary Jay Shah confirmed this on Sunday.
Shah tweeted,
“I am pleased to announce prize money of INR 125 Crores for Team India for winning the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024. The team has showcased exceptional talent, determination, and sportsmanship throughout the tournament. Congratulations to all the players, coaches, and support staff for this outstanding achievement!”
Fans were left stunned upon seeing the size of this reward for the players, albeit the BCCI’s wealth is well-known.
This also led to some funny memes on social media.
Here are fans’ reactions to this news:
