The Melbourne Stars have started their campaign poorly. After a 103-run defeat against the Brisbane Heat, they succumbed to a 7-wicket thumping loss at the hands of the Perth Scorchers.
BBL13-Stars vs Scorchers Match-6 Report: As it happened
As he usually does, Perth skipper Ashton Turner elected to bowl first on what was a slightly two-paced MCG track, though not all as challenging as some of the Stars batters made it look.
Jhye Richardson struck with the wicket of Sam Harper in the first over, and Jason Behrendorff dismissed Beau Webster in the second over to get early momentum for the Scorchers. Cooper Connolly got Thomas Rogers out just after the powerplay.
In the 9th over, then, Behrendorff returned to put two daggers in the heart of the Stars’ middle order with a double-wicket maiden. Behrendorff had Marcus Stoinis and Nick Larkin struggling to extra bounce and dismissed them both to have the Stars reeling at 49/5.
Hiton Cartwright and Liam Dawson got starts but managed only 24 and 22 runs, respectively. Hamish McKenzie, Andrew Tye, and Aaron Hardie all got into wickets to bundle the home side out for only 101.

Only the formalities of chasing the total down remained for the Scorchers. While Stephen Eskinazi played the anchor role with a run-a-ball 25, his batting partners attacked. Cooper Connolly scored 20 runs in 9 balls, and Hardie scored 20 runs in 15 balls.
Dawson, Joel Paris, and Usama Mir took one wicket each before Josh Inglis and Ashton Turner completed the chase in 13.5 overs, giving a boost to their NNR while denting the Stars’ NRR early in the season.
BBL13-Stars vs Scorchers Match-6 Report: Man of the Match
Left-arm spinner Hamish McKenzie was named the Player of the Match for his brilliant figures of 2/12, which included the wicket of Hiton Cartwright. McKenzie said he felt “pretty surreal. Don’t really have many words”, adding that playing a starring role in a win for Perth is a “dream come true”.
